FLOCK TO FAIR AS
IL
Treasure Island, Oct. 28.
(Spl.) Registration at the Shasta-Cascade
building at the San
Francisco fair piled up a new
all-time high during the past
week with visitors from the nine
Shasta-Cascade counties doing
their part with 5118 checking in
the last three days of the week.
Visitors this week were greet
ed by magnificent display of
potatoes from the Tule Lake
area of Siskiyou and Modoc
counties.
Crowds in the Wonderland
court have become so large that
extra guard service has been
necessary to handle them. The
city of Albany held a Sunday
picnic between 12 and 2 p. m.
With one week to go the Shasta
Cascade exhibit has had its
greatest month during October.

Due Eyes War Machinery
Rome, Oct. 28 (AP) Pre
mier Mussolini watched a dem
onstration of new types of arm
ored cars and motorized artil
lery today. He inspected the
equipment carefully for several
hours and drove one of the mo
torized units.
The latest "Fuller brush man"
story goes like this:
E. J. Neumann of 318 Van
couver avenue, Fuller brush
representative In M e d f o r d,
parked his automobile on Oak-
dale avenue at Main street last
night.
Somebody "jimmied" the ven
tilator window of his car and
stole a sample case containing
60 Fuller brushes of assorted
sizes and colors, three dozen
tooth brushes, four cans of
tooth powder and an Imitation
chincilla overcoat.
Mr. Neumann and city pr
lice are wondering what any
body could possibly want with
so many brushes.

the policy committee as he will,
shortly, announce his policy
plan for Oregon and Washing
ton an interlocking grid. It is
approximately the same plan as
advocated by the first adminis
trator, the late J. D. Ross. The
plan originally included a hook
up with the private plants and
systems of the two states. What
Raver will do with the private
companies will be decided after
his conferences with his boss.
Secretary Ickes.
Contract applications for a
large quantity of Bonneville
power were given no attention
by Raver and when Raver was
ordered to the national capitol
he was directed by Ickes to
bring the contracts with him
and explain why nothing was
done about them. Ickes doesn't
like private utilities, but he is
sincere in wanting Bonneville
power sold, for the government
project has been losing money
since it began generating energy
it hasn't come anywhere near
meeting the payroll, not to men
tion interest charges.
BACKED by the press of the na
tional power policy commltt.
It Is believed that the director of
the budget (an office controlled by
the president), will approve Raver's
request for SIO.OOO.OOO to go into
the budget for Bonneville In the
next congressional aesslon, and ten
million more for the following year.
Practically, but not officially. Ickea
Is In control of Bonneville and Its
patronage. The bill which would
give him atatutory control has been
sleeping In conference since the con
grtve adjourned last August and ian
not be resurrected before next January.
WAR and navy department have
finally come to a realization
that the mouth of the Columbia
river and the back country are
worthy cj better defense prepara
tions than they have been willing
to admit In the past, The Columbia
has been wide open with the de
pa rtmenta strengthening California
and Puget Sound, but leaving a
700-mile stretch neglected. It la the
longest unprotected section of the
coastline of the United 8tatea.
Now that a start has been made
on Ton ?ue Point aa a naval aviation
base, th higher-ups are anxious to
pu&h it forward aa rapidly aa pos
sible, rhe war department la also
planning better defense In that area,
which will Include greater personnel
for the coast artillery, more long
range guns and mobile anti-aircraft
equipment.
While details of this program are
necessarily not ready for the public.
It Is known that the war depart
ment Intenda "doing something
worth while" at the mouth of the
Columbia. Activity of the war de
partment will probably require new
road construction In that vicinity
by the state highway commission.

FOR STEALING AUTO;
CLEMENCY TO COLLEY
John Edwin Hallihan of De
troit, charged with grand lar
ceny for the theft of an auto
belonging to Fred Cook of this
city, was sentenced to an In
determinate term not to exceed
three years in the state prison
yesterday by Circuit Judge H.
D. Norton. Hallihan plead
guilty. ,
The crime occurred on the
night of October 20 last. Halli
han was arrested a few hours
later on the Grcensprings high
way by the state police. His
previous record included deser
tion from the army, a sentence
served at the Washington re
formatory at Monroe, and minor
offenses.
John H. Colley, 39, of West
Virginia, and the father of eight
children, plead guilty to the
theft of a heifer belonging to
E. W. Birchfield of the Central
Point district, and was granted
a suspended sentence. Colley
traded the stolen cow in on an
auto. The offense occurred last
May. Provisions of the sus
pended sentence provide that
Birchfield be reimbursed for the
stolen heifer and Colley conduct
himself in a law-abiding man
ner. Letters were received by the
district attorney from West Vir
ginia, testifying highly to Col
ley's previous good reputation
and character.
