Accusation
I IFE moved along smoothly for
Buff and the two young men
irouehout November and Decem-
zt. At Thanksgiving Mrs Webb
oked a dinner wnicn satisnea
ven her ideas of lavishness. and
educed the diners to a state of

over for hours.
At Christmas Buff made a flying
rip to New York where her rest

no secret of his warm friendship
with Buff, but smiled and shook his
head when any talk of his engage
ment to her was broached. Buff,
too. had done her part She had
called the editor of the paper in
which the gossipy paragraph had
appeared, and made it amply clear
that when there was any news of a
romantic sort to be released her
parents would do it for her and at
the proper time. A chastened so
ciety reporter called to apologize
and to ask if Buff wished a retrac
tion in print 1 .
"1 do not!" the girl replied. "All
I ask is that you keep my name out
of the paper until I give you leave
to put it in or until I discover
gold, kill my landlord, or other
wise become authentic news. As
for your silly item about Mr Cor
liss and me, forget itl It'll gradu
ally seep through the office of the
paper that there's no truth in what
you wrote. Or if it doesn't, it won't
matter. But no more arch refer
ences to budding romances where
I am concerned.
Buff, despite Tim's determined
attitude of casual friendship, was
enjoying her winter. She found the

among the young people. The Uni
versity attracted eminent lectur
ers; Buff enrolled for a part-time
course. Mrs. Webb guarded her
vigilantly. George was a perfect

And then, when the mildest Jan
uary Boulder had known in years
descended on the town, the young
er set was thrown into a state of
wild excitement by the return of
Iris DeMuth.
Angry Denunciation
THE day before her arrival Buff
and Tim hod quarreled bitterly
He came charging into her living
room at the unwonted hour of
three in the afternoon, a fact sufli
cicntly surprising In itself. He
plunged into angry denunciation
of her without any enlightening
preliminary.
"Whatever else I thought of you.
Buff, I believed you'd play fairl I
thought you'd be open and above
board with me. In fact I'd come to
consider that you leaned : liu.'e too
far toward the side of franl ness
and lack of concealment And then
this!" He glared at her accusingly
She had been writing, and little
tendrils of her bright hair escaped
from their demure knot There was
smudge of typewriter ink on one
cheek. She had slipped a blue vel
vet smock over her street dress and
its color was reflected in her eyes
She leaned back in her chair and
stared at him.
"Wha have 1 done that's not
open and above-board, Tim? How
have I not played fair?" She added.
"You might as well sit down while
you tell me, too. You're a bit over
powering, standing there and glar
ing at me. I've worked hard I
don't feel like being glared at; not
until I've had my tea. anyhow!"
"It'll do you no gond to pretend
you don't know!" He slid auto
matically into his usual comfort
able chair. "In fact the only thing
that would have helned at all

been sold. You're the only person
in Boulder who knew we'd listed it
with a real estate agency in Den
ver. I suppose," he went on bit
terly, "you felt very smug and
philanthropish "
She shook her head rebukingly.
"I'm sure there's no such word.
Tim! You mustn't take liberties
with the English language like
that."
"You to talk of taking liberties!
Buying up a lot of land that's
worth about fifteen dollars!"
"Did I pay fifteen doHars for It?
That doesn't strike me as philan
thropy on a grand scale. Tim dar
ling!" "Don't call me darling! 1 won't
be cajoled. You know as well as 1
do that you paid exactly what I
paid for it last summer: that, aside
from the agent's commission, I
stand just where 1 did before that
deal went through. I can't believe
it of you. Bull!"
"That's nice." She curled a foot
beneath her and beamed. "Because
you don't have to, Tim! I mean I'm
not a philanthropist. I'm not feel
ing a bit smug, I didn't even know
that vour land was listed for sale
Summing it all up," she finished
cheerfully, "it must have been al
least two other people who bought
it, I should think. I'm as innocent
as a babe in arms."
'Enough's Enough'
HE stared at her, his fixed con
viction that she and only she
could be capable of so foolish an
investment doing battle with what
he instinctively realized as the
ring of truth in her voice.
"But who else? The land's
worth practically nothing. Unless
someone's kidding himself thai

I've taken specimens from almost
every square foot of it. It's a dud.

purchaser was induced by the

I seem to sec this Iris girl's hand
in the transaction. Anvhow,
didn't buy it! I didn't know it was
for sale, let alone how much you'd
paid for it last summer."

She scorned to answer save for
the direct gaze of her blue eyes.
He ran a worried hand through
his hair. "Iris is definitely out,"
he said. "She's the one person in
the world who wouldn't buy what
she spent weeks and and the em
ployment of all her arts and graces
in inducing me to take on. But
here's what. B11IT. This fellow Nes
bit he's the head of the agency
in Denver said that the pur
chaser offered a certain sum for
the land. Nesbit didn't Know it was
the exact amount George and 1
paid for it last summer. And the
name signed to the deed is James
Smith. So obviously an assumed
name that Nesbit would have re
