PORTLAND COUPLE
HURT IN SMASHUP
NEAR GOLD HILL
. . Vernon R. Churchill, 51, of
Portland, northwest manager of
McCann-Erickson Inc., national
advertising agency, and his wife
were confined in Community
hospital today with injuries they
.received about 3 o'clock yester
day afternoon when their auto
mobile was forced off the Paci
fic highway a short distance
north of Gold Hill.
Their car, forced onto a soft
shoulder of the highway by an
unidentified motorist, skidded
and struck a large rock in a
ditch alongside, the road.
Mr. Churchill, widely known
in northwest newspapcer and
advertising agency circles, was
the more seriously injured, his j
left arm being broken between!
the shoulder and elbow and his
forehead badly cut. His condi-
tion, hospital attendants said, j
was not critical.
Mrs. Churchill, also 51 years
and severe bruises and shock.
She was not seriously injured,
hospital attendants stated.
Mr. and Mrs. Churchill, who
reside at 6100 S. E. Reed Col
lege Place, Portland, were en
route to San Francisco, where
Mr. Churchill was to confer with
officials of his company. Mrs.
Churchill was driving the car
at the time of the accident,
while Mr. Churchill was asleep.
They were taken to the hos
pital in the Perl ambulance.
Fourteen percent of traffic
accidents at intersections during
the first eight months of 1939
resulted in injuries or deaths,
figures compiled by the safety
division of the secretary of
state's office reveal. There were
10.299 accidents at intersections,
1.470 causing deaths or injuries.

20-30 CLUB MEET
Activities of the United States
navy were the subject of an in
teresting program presented at
last night's regular weekly dinner-meeting
of the 20-30 club
in Hotel Jackson.

Roesel showed four reels of
sound pictures depicting the du
ties and work of auxiliary ves
sels comprising the refueling
units, repair ships and hospital
ships of the fleet; fleet maneu
vers and flight formations of air
craft. Merritt rlittle reported on the
party held last Saturday night
at Chalker's Motel in honor of
newly-married members of the
club. Neville Biden reported on
the activities of the Sea Scout
Ship "West," a 20-30 club pro
ject. President Gene Monaco
presided.

jewelry and furniture found in
his tomb early in the century
have been buried again this
time in bombproof shelters.
MRS. HAUEY, 88
FALLS IN STROKE
Mrs. Addie Halley, 88. owner
of the Palace hotel at 30 South
Central avenue, was in a criti
cal condition in Sacred Heart
hospital this afternoon follow
ing a bruising fall down the
hotel stairs after she suffered a
stroke.
Her attending physician said
she sustained a severe gash on
the back ot hei head, which
may prove to be a skull frac
ture, and several body bruises.
She is unconscious and hasn't
been disturbed, the doctor stat
ed. No x-ray pictures have
been taken because of her con
dition, which was described by
the physician as "critical, due
to a combination of the stroke
and head injury."
The accident occurred about
10:30 this morning. Mrs. Hal
ley had almost reached the foot
of the long flight of stairs when
she suffered the stroke and
fell the remaining distance to
the street, her physician ex
plained. Immediately after she
fell the doctor was called, and
the Perl ambulance was sum
moned to rush her to the hos
pital. 1

York woman, traveling in thtf
country on the fringe of the
Olympic peninsula, leaned up to
a bus driver here recently and
remarked: "I understand wild
deer run across the roads out
here." Before the driver could
answer a doe and a fawn were
picked up by the bus' headlights.
