L
Alaska Colonists May Be
Forced to Kill Stock Ac
count Shortage of Feed
Palmer, Alaska, Oct. 19.
(AP) Faced with the necessity
of killing livestock because of
an early winter crop freeze-out,
Matanuska colonists also faced
today the prospect of a new gen
eral manager of the colony cor
poration, Ross L. Sheely, operator of
Alaska's second largest farm,
submitted his resignation as
manager of the Alaska rural re
habilitation corporation yester
day, effective at the board's con
venience. He said his own farm
required his undivided attention.
Earlier, Sheely said the emer
gency caused by the early grip
of winter in the valley would ne
cessitate butchering of some of
the colony's dairy cattle because
of an imminent feed shortage.
An early freeze and 10 inches ot
snow damaged root and hay
crops heavily 10 days ago. Wea
ther developments were awaited
by farmers to ascertain the full
extent of their losses.
Sheely cautioned farmers
against hasty action, declaring:
"The unprecedented storm
made a critical situation. Some
cattle no doubt must be butch
ered, but an effort will be made
by the corporation to devise a
method of carrying the cattle
through the winter, even if the
cost approaches the cost of buy
ing new cattle in the spring."

ning. VISITS VERL WALKER,
After being separated for a
couple of decades, two former
Los Angeles school mates spent
the day together here yester
day. They were the Rev. Thomas
F. F. Dixon, Baptist missionary
in El Salvador for the past
4'4 years, and Vcrl G. Walker
of 205 West Jackson boulevard.
Mr. Dixon, spending a six
months' leave in this country,
was a Medford visitor between
trains yesterday, having arrived
in the morning and left last
night. He comes from southern
California and this was his first
visit to Oregon. He said he liked
Oregon.
Mr. Dixon described Salvador
as a peaceful, industrious coun
try, Spanish being the native
tongue. Coffee is the principal
product, 85 percent of which is
exported, chiefly to the United
States, he related, adding that
the European war has had lit
tle effect upon the country.
Mr. Dixon plans to return to
Salvador to resume his mission
ary work. There are two Bap
tist schools which are conducted
primarily as educational insti
tutions, he related, The coun
try is sparsely settled, averaging
only 120 persons to the square
mile, he said.
