war-buying barrage today that soon
turned out to consist largely of
duds.
At a fairly active opening steels,
chemicals and alrcrafts led an ad
vance of fractions to 3 points or so.
The sortie waa short-lived and ex
treme gains were substantially re
duced or converted Into losses before
the end of the first hour.
Dealings dwindled as the Hat back
tracked and transfers for the full
session approximated 750,000 shares.

Including Prime Minister Chamber
lain's rejection of Hitler's peace pro
posals and the latter'a subsequent
reported threat to got the European
conflict going In earnest, served to
bring a mild revival In the market's
