ABERDEEN PROVING GROUNDS,
Md., Oct. 13. (AP) The nation's ex
panding army tuned up eamplei from

Wide Range In Guns
Weapons ranged from a 16-lnch
seacoast behemoth and other calibers
down to the new Garand semi-automatic
rifle.
The audience was tightly limited
to those holding Invitations. All
others were barred by guards who
unceasingly patrol the fenced 20,000'
acre reservation, the army's only
proving grounds, where all the new
weapons were planned by army ord
nance officers after long study of
those in use by foreign armies.
Busy shipping lanes in Chesapeake
bay were patrolled early and maritime
activities banned from the area that
was the objective of the 3,100-pound
projectile from the 600-ton seacoaat
gun located 30 miles away.
Target Two Miles Up
Coast artillerymen took over the
firing of the three-inch anti-aircraft
guns, aimed by electrically operated
equipment. The battery's objective
was a point about two miles up.
Its target a cloth sleeve towed, by
a pi an .An order for 300 such guns,
said by ordnance experts to be cap
able of hurling 20 to 30 twelve and
half pound shells well over five mllc;
straight up, Is nearlng completion.
Also on demonstration was tin
machine-gun like .37 millimeter antl- '
aircraft gun. capable of shooting 120
to 130 explosive shells a minute, each
weighing one and a half pounds, M
low flying attackers. Several hundred
have been ordered to replace the .60
caliber machine guns now In use.
