Billy Hulen lays:
Eureka Threatens
Unbeaten Record
Of Black Tornado
It may not turn out to be such,
a nobody eema to know exactly
what aort of a ball club Jay wmara
has created this season, but the
coaches and players ol Medford high's
Black Tornado are working on the
assumption that the red and green
clad Eureka, (Cal.) grid aggregation.
here Friday night, will present the
most difficult hurdle yet encountered
by the lofty-scoring locals.
This assumption Is based on three
known factors: first, the reputation
for toughness ' Eureka teams have
built up over a long span of years;
second the record the 1039 outfit
has produced; and third, a fullback
by the name of Bill Prentice.
Medford hasn't beaten the Call
fornlans since 1938, when Ray Lewis,
Bob Olson, Bob Wilson and some of
the boys turned the trick by a
19 to 0 count. In 1937, on the local
field, Eureka broke out a fine run
ning attAck featuring Don Durdan.
now on the Oregon State varsity, and
downed the Tigers 20 to 13. Last Rea
son, at ' Eureka, the Bowermanltes
were socked to the tune of 14 to 0.
So It Is no secret to all concerned.
In this neck of tho woods, that Eu
reka Is bound to be mighty tough
It ALWAYS Is.
Bo far a Eurrka's 1939 record
Is concerned, It uliows one victory
and one defeat. Opening the sea
son two weeks ago the Callfor
nlnns trounced Madrra, 28 to 0,
and after the game sports writers
limbed to the extent of calling this
year's team one of the greatest
In Eureka annuls. Last Friday
night the Jay UN lard eleven was
defeated by St. Mary's hi eh of
Hun Francisco, 7 to 0. Hut, this
defeat came at the hands of a
machine which hasn't hcen
scored on In five straight games.
Including tiffs with the most
powerful outfits In the Itny re.
glon.
The third factor Fullback Bill
Prentice Is probably the most Im
portant In the lot. Bowerman. looal
mentor, says that Prentice Is con
sidered In California as the best full
back In the state. He Is a big, fast
hombre, a trlple-threoter who leads
the Eureka ground attack and Is on
the throwing end of practically all
posses. He Is well-known to present
Tigers who played last year, for It
was Prentice who scored Eureka's
first touchdown against the 1038
Tornado.
The Timers will go against Eureka
"In the dark." so for as any definite
knowledge of the enemy attack Is
concerned. Medford hasn't scouted
Eureka this season. However, from
play-by-plny pre-rs accounts of Eu
reka's two pnmes, the IochI coaches
have lrarnrd that Jay Wlllnrrt still
has his team tossing that agat
around and delivering plenty of
ra7zle-dn7.2le behind sound, funda
mental tactics.
With the Klamath Falls gigantic
looming a week from Friday night.
It will be Interesting to note the
outcome of the Peltean-Ashlond game
this coming Friday eve. After that
tilt is over, some cort of comparison
of tho respective strength of Med
ford and Klamnth Falls will be pos
sible. Medford heat Grants Pais, 88
to 0, and MrnnM pns heat Ash
In ih). 12 to 0. Thus, strictly on ,
papr, Klamnth IMIls will have
to wit Hop Ashland hy no points
to attiiln the same amount of
power shown by the local. ThU

The Klamath Fulls Red Sox beat
McCloud, fl to 4, In 10 Innings Sun
day, deadlocking the Northern Cali
fornia league Shautjhnessy playoff
finals at one game apiece and mak
ing a third and deciding game neces
sary. It will be played at Klamath
Falls next Sunday.
By winning and tlelng up the
series, the Red Sox postponed for
another week the game between
Med ford's Craters, Southern Oregon
league playoff champs, and the play
off wlnn-rs in the N. O. L. if such
a game Is to take place. An we have
mentioned before, friends, these base
ball clubs will still be playing when
Tennessee and U. S. O. face off In the
Rose Bowl on New Year's Day.
Speaking of baseball, Paul Hoffard
received a letter from Ray Brooks,
head of the Oregon State league,
stating that Medford had a good
chance getting in the powerful State
loop next season. If tt so desired.
Brooks said that ho expected all State
league towns to have lights In two
years at the most, and that If Med
ford Installed mazdas next season
it would greatly enhance this town's
chances of Joining the circuit, which
we believe will go class D Inside of
three years.

THIS WEEK-END
NEW YORK, Oct. 11. (AP) Look
ing at things entirely from the in
tersections angle, this Is likely to
be about the biggest week of the
1030 football season and another one
which will enhance the prestige of
southern football.
On a percentage basis southern
teams are still below the .000 mark
In their major encounters with north
ern rivals, but In the matter of glory
they're tops and apparently headed
still higher. Duke over Colgate, Ala
bama over Fordham, Louisiana State
over Holy Cross, Mississippi State
over Arkansas and Vanderbllt over
Rice have been major southern tri
umphs against other sections. Then
there have been such equally amov
ing affairs as the close scores of
Qeorgla Tech anlnst Notre Dame and
Furman, Centre and Virginia, which
didn't figure to win at all, against
Army and Navy.
This week's program looks like
much the same sort of stuff, al
thouRh the east figures to get off to
a head stort when Boston College,
apparently powerful though still un
tried, faces twice-beaten Florida on
Thursday.
North Carolina, with a wealth of
fine backs. Including those "touch
down twins," George Btlmwelss and
Jim Lalanne. figures to have the
best of New York university. Ford
hsm doesn't appear strong enough
to stop Tulane at New Orleans. So
fsr. the Rams have ben a one-track
tam without the line to make their
power plays effective.
Duke. Invading the north, should
be able to tackle Pitt's Panthers at
least on even terms.
