WeSHINt3TON (UP) The depart
ment of agriculture 1 promoting a
new breakfast food, made from grain
sorghums.
The grains, feterlta, kaflr anrfrntlo,
are said to compare favorably with
corn and" wheat cereals In taste and
nutritional value. Heretofore, they
had been used only for livestock
feed.
Increasing popularity of the new
cereal Is predicted by the depart
ment's food experts. The farm se
curity administration has instructed
Its home demonstration agents to
Introduce H among low-Income farm
families.
Tests made by the department
showed the food value of grain sor
ghums only slightly below corn and
wheat. .Raw white corn has 1,708
calories per pound while feterlta has
1,736. Wheat has 1,075 per pound,
"In the light of these- facts, the
farm security administration con
siders Itself on safe ground In spon
soring the grain sorghums as a food,
though there are many things we
would like to know," an FSA official
said.
The circumstances which prompted
the PSA to sponsor the new food
were largely financial. Grain sorghum
Is the cheapest source of several food
elements. It Is grown extensively In
the southwest.
"The grain sorghums may be used
as a breadstuff as well as a break
fast cereal. When finely ground It
makes an excellent muffin," the
food experts said, "They have dem
onstrated their qualities In scores of
communities,"

Normally Scotland Yard can throw

left unexamined, thus following the
famous Scotland Yard dictum that
"It's thoroughness that does It."
Now, however, scores of Its mem

Chief of the murder cases at pres
ent Is that of Mrs. Margaret Newton
Jackson, who was found strangled
In her home at Sholden, near Deal,
Kent. She was the wife of a colliery
employe, and although Scotland Yard
has had Its best men working on
that case for weeks, they still are
without a concrete clew.
All they know is that sometime
between 8:10 a. m. and 11:30 a. m.
somebody slipped Into Mrs. Jack
son's home, strangled her, and slip
ped out again without being seen,
although the house Is on the main
road and hundreds of people passed
It during that time.

" WASHINGTON, Oct. 6. Perhaps
the best evidence of the President's
good sense In dealing with the cur
rent emergency Is the number of
things his subordinates are not do
ing. For example, the ebullient sec
retary of the Interior, Harold J. Ickes.
Is not planning to shout for a third
term In his forthcoming radio de
bate with General Hugh S. Johnson.
It Is obvious enough why third
term shouting by a member of the
President's cabinet Is unwise at a
time when politics are supposed to
be adjourned. Nevertheless, the beau
ties of a third term were the Ickes
topic until a few days ago, when the
President suggested that something
less controversial might be more ap
propriate. As the story comes from sound
sources, the Ickee-Johnson debate was
arranged during the summer, after
the two men had written for and
against the third term In look. In
these peaceful days, third term talk
was cheerfully countenanced at 'the
White House, where the Idea of the
debate was cleared. With his clear
ance papers all In order, Ickes pro
ceeded to write one of his usual rip
snorting, slam-banglng, super-adjectival
third term speeches. At the
last moment, however, he had qualms
and took the speech to the Presi
dent. The President, who had for
gotten all about the debate, If his
secretariat had ever told him oX It,
promptly asked Ickes to throw the
speech away, Ickes then Issued a
short statement announcing a change
of plans.
Ickes action In rechecklng his
White House clearance was In line j
with the policy of the President
other pro-term lieutenants, who are '
no longer pushing their pet project
In any active way. Their passivity
may have been suggested by their

NUTRITION A
There Is no scientific evidence that
vitamin A Is of any greater Import
ance In maintaining normal Immun
ity or freedom' from illness, or In
preventing any
specific Infecti
ous disease than
Is any other vita
min or any es
sential nutritive
element. If the
intake of vlta
mln A Is less
than the body
requires then the
body will be that
much more less
capable of main
talnlng normal
Immunity (we do
not speak of "resistance" because no
one knows what that may be, other
than Immunity as this la recognized
and to a degree measured scientific
ally). But the same thing may be
said of the Intake of any other vita
min or of calcium or phosphorus or
orln or Iodine or sulphur or protein
or fat or starch.
The specific part played by vita
min A In building or maintaining
Immunity consist In keeping the mu
cous membranes throughout the body
In normal condition. Absence or In
sufficient Intake of A, In animal or
man, manifests Itself by formation
of "sratlfled keratinizing epithelium"
Instead of the normal soft columnar
epithelium lining the respiratory, ali
mentary, urinary and genital tracts,
the eyelids, etc. Mucous membrane
of that sort Is Irritable and more
readily susceptible to penetration or
Invasion by bacteria. Restore vita
min A to the diet and. If the de
generation has not progressed too
far, the epithelium of the mucous
membranes will recover Its normal
condition, and the Individual - will
again have the protection of this
"first line of defense" against In
fection. How much ground there may be
for the belief that vitamin A de
ficiency may be a cause of kidney
stone or bladder Btone in some cases 1
I do not know. In animal experl- j
ments kidney stone may be produced
by a diet lacking vitamin A. and the j
stones so produced may later disap
pear when vitamin A Is restored to
the diet. Whether this observation 1
applies to kidney or bladder stone in
human beings Is a question. Here
again no possible harm can be done
by the therapeutic test In any case
the patient must take at least
100.000, better 200,000 units of vita
min A dally, preferably natural vita
min A (four or eight capsules dally)
over a period of at least two months,
to determine whether any Improve
ment Is brought about.
Some good oculists now prescribe
vitamin A as an adjunct In the treat
ment of numerous eye troubles which
may depend at least In part upon
nutritional deficiency. Patients In
the early stage of cataract frequently
report marked improvement In vi
sion when they have token an opti
mal ration of A for some time, but

course of cataract or possibly due

THERE'S a hen on in the Balkans
today's (Saturday's) dispatches
leave no doubt of that. The eggs are
IMMENSELY Important. Don't look
for world-shattering developments
until they begin to hatch.
THE talk today Is , of a Black sea
pact. In a Black sea pact, Turkey
Is Important for Turkey holds the
gate of the Dardanelles. The Darda
nelles gate controls the back-door
route to Germany. It also controls
Russia's outlet to the Mediterranean.
Whoever pulls the strings that
open or close this gate will be a
person of consequence In the dicker
ing (and the double-crossing) that
must come before what was started
when Hitler moved Into Poland Is
finished.
There are plain signs that STALIN
aspires to be that person.
(Turkey Is the nominal holder of
the Dardanelles gate. Turkey's for
eign minister has been commuting
between Ankara and Moscow for days.
He hasn't been traveling Just for the
ride and the scenery. Turkey Is
afraid of Russia, and because she
Is afraid she Is friendly.)
THE big question right now Is:
What Is Stalin up to?
The easiest way to find an answer
Is to apply the good old Missouri
system for finding a lost mule: Fig
ure out what you would do and
where you would go If you were a'
mule.
If you were Stalin, you would
probably try to (get yourself into a
position to play Germany against
Britain and France, hoping that both
may fight themselves to the point
of exhaustion, leaving you the big
boss.
It looks as If that Is what Stalin
is up to.
(All this, of course. Is pure specu
lation. All we little people can do
la to speculate. The big shots know
what Is In the wind, or at least have
a shrewd suspicion, but they are
keeping mum. The big fighting right
now is in the diplomatic clinches,
and the diplomats always have been
good at keeping the reporters out.)
KEEP this In mind:
The old order In Europe and
Asia may be breaking up, and
EVERYBODY over there is chiefly
Intent upon schemes to snatch as

those fruits and wants the trade to

On the other hand, apple growers
of Pennsylvania and Virginia are
adopting resolutions demanding that
"the government keep out of the
apple business."
These eastern producers complain
that when FSCC purchases, the
price the government agency pays
"pegs" the price, and these growers
want an open, free market, believing
that they can make more money
that way.
IN connection with the plan to buy
pears and apples, FSCC will spend
money and time educating reliefers
and school teachers how to use the
fruit, especially pears. When the
pears are picked and boxed they are
not at the correct stage of ripeness,
but there Is a technique In ripening
them before eating. Not knowing
this, school teachers have handed
green pears to needy school children

As for apples. It seems a pity, but
