NEW YORK The war of gum

In a barrage of English, French,
Polish and German, the nations at
war are bombarding each other and
the world with all the big guns of
propaganda: claims and counter'
claims, lies, charges of atrocity, fan
tastlc tales of the brutality and
freed of enemy leader.
In the early days of the war, Na
tional Broadcasting company engi
neers kept six short-wave receivers
tuned consftantly on Warsaw, Berlin,
Paris and Daventry, England.

RICHMOND, Ky. P It actually
happened: A kerosene lamp flamed
Its fire nearly reached the cell
ing. John Whltaker, fearing an ex
plosion, threw the lamp out of the
window. The lamp struck a pet
rabbit, setting Its fur on fire. The
rabbit ran under a neighbor'! house,
with Whltsker's dog In close pursuit.
The dog caught the blaring rabbit
and dragged It from under the house.
The fire wsa put out.

Tudor sedan and Fordor sedan are
available In both. There Is also a
deluxe convertible club coupe with
automatic top standard equipment.
New styling of distinctive beauty
Is presented by the Mercury 8 for
1040, shown below, as the newest
car In American motordom swings
Into Its second year. The front end
view above reveals the gracefully
flaring chromium radiator grilles,
and the beautifully molded hood
and streamlined body. The 1040 cars
offer many Improvements. A new
flnger-tlp gearshift la on the steer
lng column. A new torsion bar ride-
stabilizer helps to control sldesway
and enables the car to take corners
or negotiate rough roads on an even
keel. There Is a new controlled all

ing 52 cents and an explanation that
the writer years ago had plucked a
geranium from a park garden. "I'm
