Joe Manning, herder with Tonv Vey's
sheep on the Grande Rondo river,
told In town today of a close brush
with a wolf, one of the few such
animals seen In Oregon hills In
recent years, about 10 days ago.
Manning said the animal popped
from the brush 30 feet away and
calmly looked him over. He hiid
only a Ja-callber rule but he put
It In action. The wolf, he said, got
away but two days, later he found
Its carcass on a hillside.

Purneas cargo steamer Avtemore re
ported today th vessel was sunk by
a submarine last week. Eleven sur
vivors of the crew of 40 were landed

PORTLAND, Sept. 31. W) One
man accused of an Iowa slaying
signed a confession In a Eugene Jail
today but a companion, atmllarly
charged, was free because a Portland
police bureau attendant placed his
fingerprints In the wrong file.
Captain of Detectives John J. Kee
gan said Francis Welch, accused with
Fred Ostenrelder, 21, of slaying Har
old J. Dreher of Mason City at Dee
Moines, la, July IB, served a ten
day sentence here last month for
vagrancy under the name of John
Little. Ho was released before the
mlrtlled fingerprints were recovered
and checked with Information from
. Iowa.
One Arrested In Eugene.
Ostenrelder waa arrested at Eu
gene on charges of stealing and burn
ing railroad ties. In a signed state
ment to Lane county Sheriff C. A.
Swarts today he said he aided Welch
and a man Identified only as "Slim"
to get Dreher under the bridge and
rob him of one dollar."
The trio, the youthful prisoner
related, stole Dreher's automobile and
planned to drop their victim outside
the city limits. Ostenrelder said
Dreher Jumped from the car and as
he was going through the door Welch,
who was sitting In the back seat
with him. shot him. The gun was a
,38-callbcr that we got In the rob
bery of a flop house at Minneapolis."
Fled West.
The youth told the sheriff they
found $19 In a pocketbook beneath
the floor matting. They abandoned
the automobile In Council BluffB
and went to Omaha by streetcar,
where they learned Dreher was dead.
Welch and Ostenrelder fled to
Portland and Seattle, the statement
said, and then continued to Eugene
after Welch completed a city Jail
sentence.
He waa unable to provide Informa
tion on Welch's whereabouts or Iden
tify "Slim."

First meeting of the Civic Improve
ment club was held September 8
with a luncheon at the Community
hall. On September 22 the club will
ba host for a pot luck dinner in
the evening honoring the school fac
ulty and board of directors. All pat
rons are Invited to come.
Marie and Marlce McLaren and
brother Richard, returned last week
from a week In San Francisco at the
fair.
The first meeting of the library
board was held at the home of Mrs,
Sam Sandry Tuesday evening with
all members present. Mrs. Elizabeth
Fowler Is president, Mrs. Kate Mc-
II vain secretary, Mrs. Richard Hot
gltt treasurer, Mrs. Myrtle McOregory
and Mrs. Sandry, Miss Velma Smith,
librarian and Mrs. Belle Hart assist
ant librarian, were also present. The
public library Is open every Wednes
day and Saturday from 2 to S o'clock,
Mrs. Cloyd Dick Is enjoying a visit
from her parents, Mr. and Mrs. 9.
Kinner of Salinas, Cal. On Septem
ber 13 Mrs. Dick entertained for her
mother with the following guests
present: Mesdames Wiley, Breasle,
Badley. Lucas, Blrdseye, Sandry,
Kate Mcllvain, Carter Patterson,
Fowler and McLaren. The afternoon
was spent In visiting and playing
Chinese checkers. Delicious refresh
ments were served by the hostess.
James B. Martin left Tuesday for
Lawrence, Kas. Mr. Martin teaches
and studies chemistry at the college
there.
Mr. and Mrs. Sam Sandry left
Thursday for Portland. On the way
they will pick up Mabel Wllaon at
Roseburg and at Portland they will
be Joined by their son-in-law and
daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Paul Woods,
and son Don, and will all Journ-y
to Bismarck, N. D. Mrs. Wilson will
proceed to Utlca, K. Y., and Mr.
and Mrs. Woods to Blooming ton. R.
I., and all will attend the New York
fair before returning to Bismarck.
Mr. and Mrs. Sandry and Don will
stay at Bismarck where they will
visit another son-in-law and daugh
ter, Mr. and Mrs. W. A. Grimm, for
.a month.
E. Reed Carter returned home
September 13 from the Clatskanle
conference. Mr. Carter was elected
vice-president of the Oregon reclam
ation congress this week and also
made chairman of the directors com
mittee for the Grants Pass district.
He takes the place of the late Olen
Arnsplger of Medford.
Live Oak Orange met Saturday eve
ning at the home of Mrs. Letsy
Miller with a farewell party for Mrs.
Millie Walker who Is leaving for a
new home at Corvaltls, Ore., where
her daughter Sybil, and niece Phyllss,
will attend school and Mrs. Walker

Mr. and Mrs. Charles Sams cele
brated their 60th wedding anniver
sary September 10 with open house.
Their many friends met at the com
munity hall in the evening and they
were guests at a covered dish din
ner. At noon a dinner was enjoyed
at their home by a few friends and
relatives. Charles and Minnie Sams
were married at Lehigh, Iowa, Sept.
19, 1889, and came to Rogue River
In 1902. They have two sons, Lyle
of Grants Pass and Will In Klam
ath Falls. A daughter. Grace, passed
away in 1918. Mrs. Roy Edwards of
this city Is a grand-daughter and
Miss Betty Edwards their great
granddaughter. The funeral for F. H. Adams was
held Wednesday In Grants Pass with
burial In Rogue River cemetery. Mr.
Adams has lived here many years
and has a host of friends who will
mourn his passing. He is survived by
an only son, Frances. Mrs. Adams
