Convictions at Seymour Welsa. a
Huey Long lieutenant, and four other
personi on mail fraud charges spur
red federal prosecutors today in their
attack upon Louisiana scandals and
paved the way for -trial of Weiss and
former Governor Richard W. Leche
on other charges.
The convictions, punishable by 10
year sentences and 110.000 fines, ren
dered a staggering blow to the Long
political machine, now fighting for
retention of power with a state gun-
ernetorlal election only four months
away. The late Senator Long's
brother. Governor Earl K. Long, Is
a candidate.
. Weiss, one of the three heirs to
the powerful Long machine, and
four co-defendants were found
'"guilty as charged" last night on
the government's contention they
blllced Louisiana State university out
of $78,000 In an alleged double sale
of hotel furnishings to the unlver.

Convicted with him were Dr. James
Monroe Smith, much-lndlcted former
president of the university: Monte
Hart, Wealthy New Orleans contrac
tor; Louis C. Lesage. former Standard
Oil official, and Emory Adams,
Smith's nephew by marriage. -
The government contended Weiss
got 116.500. Dr. Smith $25,000. Hart
about $17,500 and Lesage $8,500 In
a deal whereby Bienville hotel fur
nishings were sold to L.8.U. for $76,-
000 after the- university allegedly
purchased them, previously In a $675,
vuu deal lor me note,, rrooecuvore
charged the malls were used In the
transaction, leading to convictions of
each on two counts.

Heat the pork in a frying pan- Add
and brown the onions, poppers and
celert. Pour in xhe rest of the- -m-
gradients .and mix wtth a fork.-Cool
silghtly. Spread on meat.
Jellied Vegetable Salad
1 package lemon-flavored gelatin
1 a3 cups boiling water
1 tablespoons vinegar
1 tablespoon granulated sugar
1 cups chopped cabbage
13 cup diced cucumbers
cup chopped plmlentos
3 ta b lespoons sal ad dressing
13 teaspoon salt
Dlsolve the gelatin In the water.
Add the vinegar and sugar. Cool. Mix
In the remaining ingredients. Chill
Serve on lettuce.
