Thanks to Superintendent
A varied program, which served the
antl-tuberculosls Christmas seal to
students In so many forms It threat
ened to supplant the old curriculum
stand bys, reading, writing and arith
metic, has been completed In the
Medford schools. A "great big vote
of thanks" was extended E. H. Hed
rlck and his staff today by the an
nual seal sale committee.
So thorough was the cooperation
given by the schools to the education
al program of the annual drive that
one student declared she met a test
on the Christmas seal In every clens
rooom she entered.
Public speaking Instructors, hygiene
teachers, English teachers, element
ary school teachers, art supervisors
and all the others participated In the
drive to acquaint all Medford school
children with the Christmas seal and
the work It represents. The program
assumed a very practical aspect when
general information regarding tuber
culosis. Its prevention and cure, was
brought Into many classrooms. Whom
to see In case there are symptoms of
the disease was made clear as was the
attitude to be assumed by each In
dividual toward the person who has
the disease.
Plays, speeches and even songs
grew out of the campaign.
Pictures of foods, which will aid
the body In fighting tuberculosis
were exhibited by one group. The
public speaking classes at Medford
senior high, school sent three speak
ers on a tour of many of the rural
schools. The classes of the junior
high school prepared six radio plays
and presented them. These classes
are Instructed by Bertrand C. Ad
ams and Grace Slices.
The educational program was
adopted two years ago to supplant
the actual sale of the Christmas
seals In the schools. It was found
so satisfactory that the 1B38 com
mittee asked for the same coopera
tion from Mr. Hedrlck and his staff.
Sale of seals In the schools was lim
ited to the opening of booths for one
day this week In the high school .
This was done to encourago high
school students to purchase Christ
mas seals from their own allowance
as they will be the citizens of tomor
row, responsible for the perpetuation
of this drive for complete eradication
of tuberculosis.
HAYES RESIGNS AS
The Jackson County Board of
Health In meeting December 19th
read the resignation of James 0.
Hayes, Jr., as Jackson county sanitar
ian. The resignation was accepted
with an' expression of the board's
appreciation of his splendid services
of the past three years.
Mr. Hayes Is leaving Medford to ac
cept a position In San Francisco. Hie
successor will be named at an early
date.
Georgia Is the leading state In the
production of improved varieties of
pecans, accounting for 43 percent of
the nation's total.
