Edttln Bryant Hawkins, 67, resident
of the Applegate valley since 1017,
died suddenly In a local hospital early
Saturday morning. He had been sick
only a short time.
Mr. Hawkins was born In Edlna
Mo., January 14, 1671, He spent his
arly .lite In Missouri and Oolrado,
completing his schooling In Colo
rado Springs, Colo. He spent six
years 'in Nebraska whero he ongaged
In stock raising with a brother, the
ranch sending fine imported horses
from the east to the west coast.
Later Mr. Hawkins leased and op
erated a large fruit and wheat ranch
u Prosno, pal. Subsequently he
moved to Oakland, Cnl whero he
took a course In general mining nnd
assaying, following this, occupation
for. many years.
'' In: 10.17 he came to southern Ore
gon and bought a farm on Thomp
son crook whero he since resided.
, Mr. Hawkins Is survived by his
mother. Mrs. Mary K. Fox of Apple
gfte. a sister, Mrs. Julia N. Rodgers
o Boston, Mass., a brother, Claude
Hawkins of Applegoto. and a half,
brother, Bryant T. Neckcr of Los An
geles. Funeral arrangements are being
made by the Perl funeral home.

countess Astor today described
dictators as "lunatics at large."
Speaking In support of camps
for children, the Vlrglnls-born
member of parliament aald, "Brit
ain does not expect war, but we
sever can tell' what will happen
because dictators are like lunatics
at large."
She urged British government
to build camps, where children
could be sent In time of war, In
stead of building trenches.
"I don't believe that anybody Is
going to get Into trenches," she
said. "I certainly am going to
s'av on top."
TOY SHOP AT END
The fire department's toy shop
will close for the year Tuesday when
transfer of the playthings to a va
cant part of the Pan tori urn at 36
North Holly street will begin.
The firemen announced yesterday
they can handle no more old toys
this year as two days are required for
the drying of paint after the play
things have been reconstructed and
there Is therefore not sufficient time
to do any more work.
The toys, hundreds of reconstruct
ed and repainted playthings, will be
transferred Tuesday and Wednesday
to the Pantorlum. There, from 9 to
6 Thursday and Friday, the toys will
bo distributed by the Lady Lions to
parents of underprivileged children.
The toys may, be seen . it the Pan
trolum before they are distributed.

tary In her place. A letter was read
from Mra. Hlnes to the club. A mis
slonary offering was given by each
member. The Christmas lesson was
read by Mrs. Poote, taken from Luke
u. 1-33. "Silent Night" was sung by

Little Town of Bethlohem" bv the
club. Santa Claus In person arrived
with a big pack on his bnek and
gave each member a present. Bonnie
Mariln played the part of Santa
Claus. A box of chocolates sent to
the club by Mrs. Orundclond of San
Jose, Cal., was enjoyed by all, and
all wished she could have been with
us. The president, Mrs. Ellis, put
on the game of Christmas Stars.
Mrs. Poote, Iola Rush. Donna Seeg
mlller and Mrs. Sandcrsm were
chosen to play the game. Mrs. San
derson carried away the prize for
gathering the most stars. The host
