Starting tomorrow and continuing
each Friday for 18 weeis. The Mail
Tribune will publish report on snow,
road and weather conditions at fa
vorite winter sports areas In the
Shasta-Cascade Wonderland of south
ern Oregon and Northern California.
The reports will include Informa
tion obtained each Friday morning
at Crater Lake Park Headquarters,
Annie Spring, Union Creek, Diamond
lake. Lake of the Woods, Mt. Ash
land, Siskiyou Summit, Mt. Shasta
Sierra Alpine Lodge and Mt. Shasta
Snowman's Hill. Snow depth, de
scription of snow for skiing, pre
vailing weather and road condi
tions together with information of
tournaments, special events, etc.,
will be assembled for each sports
area. Jnformatlon on summer home
- conditions at Diamond lake and Lake
of the Woods resorts after major
winter storms will also be included.
Organizations cooperating with The
Mall Tribune, under the coordina
tion of the U. S. bureau of agri
cultural engineering at the Medford
branch experiment station, are Cra
ter Lake National Park, Rogue River
and Shasta National Forests, Cali
fornia Oregon Power company, and
Oregon state highway commission.
The U. 8. weather bureau will fur
nish a forecast of week-end weather.
In describing snow conditions, the
following terminology will be used:
Forked snow Is settled snow which
will support the weight of skiers.
Normal pnekeri snow Is snow which
will support skiers on skis, allowing
them to sink from one to four
Inches.
Ice packed snow is snow which will
completely support skiers on the sur
face, presenting a hard unbreakable
surface to skis.
Soft snow is unpacked snow Into
i which skiers will sink more than
four inches. Further classification
as to consistency Includes:
Powder, meaning light, fluffy snow.
Medfnm, meaning normal, soft
now.
Wet, meaning heavy, wet snow
Variable snow is snow which, as
implied, may be both soft and pack
ed. Wind often packs snow In spots,
while other portions of the surface
are soft.
Breakable crust is snow with a
surface . crust which breaks under
the weight of the skier. It is treach-
' erous and skiers will be warned of
Its existence in any area.

KLAMATH FALLS, Dec. 15. p)
With Jack Dyer, co-defendant on
murder charges In a six-year-old
. death case in their custody. Sheriff
Floyd Bone and Coroner Lee Carnell
of Plnevllle, Mo., set out for home
by car today.
Behind them they left Mrs. Ollle
Dyer, whom Jack Dyer, her husband,
accused of slaying her mother on
a farm near Plnevllle In 1033 and
against whom murder charges have
alo been filed.
Before they left, the Missouri au
thorities Indicated they expected to
continue their battle to extradite
Mrs. Dyer and that other officials
would probably be sent here within
a few days to carry on the pro
ceedings. Jftck Dyer waived extradition.
UNWANTED HUBBY USES
CAR EXHAUST IN SUICIDE
ALBANY, Dec. 15. fP) When he
learned that his wife had beer
awarded a divorce, Cecil E. Richard
son fixed a section of hose to the
exhaust of hia auto, diverted the
fumes Inside the car, and took his
own Itfe. County Coroner E. C. Fisher
said.

ON ENVELOPE FACE
Christmas seals may appear on the
front of your holiday envelopes this
year. Miss Helen Bull la, Medford
chairman of the annual drive to
finance prevention of tuberculosis,
reported yesterday. ' This ruling nas
been made, by the United States
postal department to encourage a
wider use of the little health stamps.
Throughout the month of December
this use of the seals will be per
mitted. While there has been a very satis
factory response to date in the an
nual drive, the seals are not being
very widely used. They cannot carry
their message of health about the
nation if they are left on the desk
at home, Miss Bullis reminded today.

Sol.) Marshall E. Woodell has re
signed from his position as assistant
principal of the Ashland 8enlor high
school to become registrar and ex
ecutive secretary of the Southern
Oregon State Normal school, filling
the vacancy created by the death
of Miss Katherlne M. Vincent. Mr.
Woodell will take over the post on
January 1, 1939.
A graduate of Llnfleld College In
McMlnnvllle, Mr. Woodell holds
master's degree from the University
of Oregon, and has taken advanced
work toward the doctorate at both
the University of Washington and
the University of Oregon.

advertisement In Tuesday's Mall Tri
bune and thereby started a search
for an authority to back up the spell
ing of the present, singular form of
the verb "to ski." Should it be
"skies." "skis" or "sklis"?
The Mail Tribune's two-foot. 35
pound dictionary gave every form of
the verb excepting the present, sing
ular and the suspicion grew that
perhaps Mr. Webster didn't know.
March's equally ponderous thesuarus
didn't even mention skiing (sheing.
If you prefer slang ) and the sus
picion grew that Mr. Murch was
probably Just an old fireside scholar.
Authorities at the high school were
consulted and they did the best they
could but they seemed none tso sure
themselves. The city library was call
ed but no authoritative reference
books could be found with the pres
ent, singular form of the verb.

after mature deliberation in his Ski
Hut. emerged with a rather ah&ky
opinions the word should be spelled
"sklis."
Now comes Organist Hana Hoerlein
with a positive opinion. Mr. Hoerlein
ought to know something about the
subject, for he helped to organise
the first northwest ski tournament
on Mt. Hood at Hood River and took
part In the first tournament on the
south slopes of the same mountain.
Every year he. put a new polish on
a beaker he won for first place Jump
ing in B class at the northwest
championship tourney on Mt. Hood
in 1929.
But enough of that. Here is what
Mr. Hoerlein says:
"Your inquiry about the sex gen
der, singularity, plurality, nationality,
or what-have-you. of the word 'ski,'
can be straightened out.
