which collided with slight damage

afternoon, a city police report ctated

much improved today and preparing
to' resume his duties. The chief col
lapsed suddenly while he was talk
ing to a friend in ai Ashland cafe
Wednesday noon. Unconscious for a
time. Chief Talent was taken to his
home. His condition was attributed
to over-exertion. He had been ap
parently In excellent health up to
the moment he collapsed.

prevailed In Crater Lake national
park this morning, rangers reported
by short wave radio. Park roads are
practically free of snow excepting
a few Icy spots along the drive from
headquarters to the rim, the rnneers
said. Recent rains and warm sun
shine wiped out most of the layer of
snow that ordinarily Is left on the
roads, they explained. Tire chains
were not needed, they added.
Leases For Europe David Lowry.

Sr;. of. the South Pacific highway,
left yesterday by motor car for New
Orleans whence he will embark for
France and other European countries.
Mr. Lowry expects to winter in south
em Europe and in the spring will
visit England and British isles coun
tries. The trip will combine business
and pleasure.

of Klamath Falls were to leave here
by stage this evening for Eugene
to be with their mother, Mrs. Edward
P. Severson. who Is to undergo an
operation In a Eugene hospital. Miss
Severson received a telcgrnm tnic j
morning stating that her mother had ;
become suddenly 1U at her home In j
Springfield, near Eugene, and tnat
an operation would be necessary to
day or 'tomorrow. Mrs. Cochran was
to come from Klamath Falls to Join
her sister hero for the Journey north.
Fire Action Reviewed A board of
fire review convened this morning
In Rogue River nationnl forest head
quarters under Larry K. Mays, senior
administrative assistant In the fire
control office at regional U. S. forest
service headquarters In Portalnd. Pur
pose of the conference was to review
the methods taken to suppress fires
on the forest during the past season
and to plan for future prevention and
suppression. ' Others attending the
session were Karl L. Jnnouch, super
visor of the Rosue forest, H. C. Obye,
assistant supervisor: W. L. Jones, con
struction superintendent: Slmeri Jar
vl, assistant forester in charge of fire
control, and District Rangers Lee C.
Port of Applgate, Homer Hixon of
Union Creek, and John Sarginwn of
Lake O'Woods. M. L. Merritt, assist
ant regional fores-tor In charge of op
erations, and J. F. Campbell, regional
fire chief, both "from the Portland
officr, also were exacted to be at
the conference, but they were called

Sister Dies Mrs, Bert B. Lowry, Sr.,
of the South Pacific highway, re
ceived word yesterday of her oldest
sister's death in Oakland, Cal, Her
sister, Mrs. James Higgins, resided in
Miami, Okla., and was in Oakland
on a visit. She visited the Lowry
home In Medford two years ago.
Driver Tests Usual weekly exam
ination of applicants for licenses or
permits to drive cars will be helu
here Saturday from 8 to 5 o'clock
Ward McReynolds, state examiner in
charge of the southern Oregon dis
trict, and his staff will be In the ex
amlnatlon room on the top floor
of city hall between those hours and
applicants are asked to report there.
Both written examinations and toad
tests will be given. To pass the
tests, applicants must be familiar
with the state traffic manual. Cop
ies of the manual may be obtained
without cost at city and state police
headquarters, the sheriff's office and
the Jackson County chamber of com
Enlists In N a v y Announcement
was made today of the tentative ac
ceptance of Jack . A. Offins for en
listment in the United States navy,
Offins formerly resided In Grants
Pass and now lives In Dorrls, Cal. He
was accepted conditionally for enlist
ment at the Medford recruiting sta
tion in charge of George E. Patterson.
He wilt leave here by train Monday
night for Portland where he will be
given his final qualifying examina
tions. If he passes the tests, he will
go immediately to San Diego, Cal.,
for three months of preliminary
training before being assigned to
actual duty, Mr. Patterson said.
Honor Man Cyril H. Albert, ap
prentice seaman of the U. S. navy
and son of Mrs. Mary E. Albert of 937
South Holly street, was rated as honor
man of his company at the San
Diego, Cal., training station for the
week ending December 3, George E.
Patterson, recruiter here was-notified
today. The rating Is based on all
around efficiency and general con
duct, Mr. Patterson explained. Honor
rating was awarded each week and at
the end of the three months" train
ing course. Albert was graduated
from Medford high school In 1937
and was accepted tentatively for navy
enlistment at the recruiting station
here. He passed his final qualifying
examinations in Portland and was
formally enlisted in the navy last
October 4.

Cyrus E. Woods, 77. former U. S.
