killed 4,018 persons and wounded
6,174 In Catalanla. a province In
northeastern Spain, In a little more
than two years of civil war.
Statistics up to October 31 show
this government capital alone suf
fered 170 bombardments, which kill
ed 2,500, wounded 3,200 and destroy
ed or damaged 1,200 buildings.
These figures, Which do not include
the latest raids throughout Cata
lonia, listed ottacks on 73 towns by
air and on 18 by sea.

A blanket of fog over the valley
had kept us in the .house by the
fire during the morning, but alter
luncheon Mr. and Mrs. Safe Driver
came to take us for a ride, declaring
the fog was lifting and it would be
nice In the sunshine.
Asked for his ideas on driving in
fog, Mr. Safe Driver explained:
"One should never drive faster
than they can see; that Is, It should
be possible .to stop the car within
the distance clearly visible ahead.
This might mean slowing to five
miles an hour, but it might also
mean the difference between a safe
Journey, or accident and injury."
Mr. Safe Driver also pointed out
that too many people do not realize
the distance necessary In which to
bring a car to a stop. Such drivers,
he said, are the cause of many acci
dents. By this time the women folks were
ready to start for Ashland to get a
drink of that famous llthla water.
As we reached the city limits we
heard a roar and a car went past
us like we were standing stllL Just
aa It passed a rear tire blew out.
Mr. Safe Driver stopped close to
the other car, feeling the driver
must have been In a great hurry
owing to some emet-gency, and would
appreciate aid. Asked If we might
be of any assistance, the fast driver
replied: "H--1 no, can't a fellow ride
on these roads without someone
butting In?" Mr. Safe driver asked,
"were you not on an emergency
trip?" and the young driver ans
wered, "what's It to you?"
We proceeded on to Ashland, think
ing of that Jingle: "There was a
young fellow named Ray a good
driver once, so they say. He Just
loved to speed, gave to traffic no
heed well see him I hope, that
