Building activities reached tne nign

along the Pacific coast, the Associat
ed Press wire survey showed today.
The coast's 10 largest cities, which
account for the bulk of building
activity in the Pacific states. Issued
permits totaling 14,361.000. Not only
wm this a top figure for the year,
but it was the third best month of
this decade.

conservation program for the coming
year will be held Wednesday In eight
communities of Jackson county.

yields to gentle pressure of the fin
gers. When green, however, there are
many wnys of baking or cooking
them, an follows:
Fresh Pear Upside Down Cnke
1 cup brown sugar
teaspoon cinnamon or nutmeg
4 tablespoons butter
3 winter pears
'i lemon.
Peel and cut pears Into eighths.
Meanwhile simmer until melted in a
frying pon, over low flame, the
brown sugar, butter and spice, i
Squeeze the lemon Juice onto pears.
Then lay the frxilt In flower pat- t
tern in the frying pnn, and pour
over It the following mixture:
1 cup white sugar
8 eggs
1H cups flour
1 teaspoon baking powder
6 tablespoons milk
Pinch of salt
Boat yolks with milk, add sugnr
and salt, beat until dissolved. Fold
in flour and baking powder (which
have been, sifted together) and add
stiffly beaten egg whites. Bake in
300 degree oven for one haur and
then turn on level tray and serve
hot or cold, with whipped cream.
Gingerbread Cpslde-Down Cnke
Prepare fruit in same way as pre
ceding In skillet and pour over It
prepared gingerbread mix. In mixing I
the gingerbread use 8 teaspoons less
water than the directions on pack
ng. Bhuhlng Pears'
3 cups sugar
1 cup water
cup rod cinnamon candles, ad
ditional red coloring if needed
Make syrup of sugar, water and
cinnamon drops. Cook halves of
pears fpre'.ed nnd cored) slowly until
tender. Allow to stnnd In syrup until
c'rslred color.
Broiled HaiiMtges with Pear Rings
Link sausnges
Fresh peor rings, Inch thick
3 tablespoons lemon Juice'
3 tablespoons brown sugar
1 tablespoon butter
Cook sausages in boiling water five
minutes. Arrange on broiler rack
surronuded by pear rings which hsve
been dipped in lemon Juice. Dot pear
rings with butter and sprinkle with
brown sugar. Broil 10 minutes.
Baked 11 nm with Pears
Place ham in open pan, skin side
up, and bake at 380 degrees Fahren
heit IS minutes to the pound. Take
from the oven, remove skin and
cover with 1 cup brown sugar mixed
with 3 tablespoons flour. Place 0
ctnnamoned fresh pear halves, round
ed aide up, on top of ham in flower
formation (stem ends In) using tooth
picks to skewer pear halves In place.

Return to the oven and bake for 1
hour.

or Bosc pears to your favorite muf
fin recipe. This Is particularly nice
with earn menl muffins. Another var

officers of the Portland central labor
council were retained without opposi
tion Monday night. Oust Anderson

ROBBBURO, Ore., Dec. 6 7P) The
finest turkeys from Oregon flock are
gathered at Oakland for the tenth
annual northwest turkey show, for
many years the world's largest ex
clusive turkey fair. Judging is sch
eduled to start Tuesday and will eon
tlnue throughout the week. The show
will conclude at noon Saturday,
Seventy exhibitors, 36 more than
ever before, have entered birds In the
live division of the show, although the
number of entries, 80S It slightly
below the record of approximately
000.
Competition Keen
Oregon exhibitors, according to I
O. Toung, are becoming better ac
quainted with show rules and perfec
tion standards, and as a result are
showing only birds that have a rea
sonable, chance to win awards. Com
petition this year will be closer than
ever before, judging hastily from the
fine quality of stock displayed, Mr.
Young declared.
While there has been a very -encouraging
Increase In the number of
Oregon exhibitors, growers from out
side the state have been discouraged
by the fact that Oregon turkeys walk
ed away with the high honors at
nearly all turkey shows throughout
the country last season, Mr. Young
states, and, as a result, they feel It
useless to attempt competition.
Entries In the dressed division are
expected to be near 800, according to
T. B. Garrison, managr of that de
partment. Dressing Contest
Judges In the live division are H. P.
Orlffln. Salt Lake City, Utah, and
J. H. Nichols, Tacoma, Wash. Dressed
birds will be Judged by M. H. Shook.
Roseburg, and F. E. Fox, Corvallls.
Principal features of the week's
program, aside from the displays and
Judging, will be a turkey dressing
contest this afternoon, the annual
turkey show dsnce Wednesday; the
meeting of the northwest turkey
breeders association, sponsors of the

nual turkey show banquet at the
