Hollywood Is Dumb
TXTHT can't we have more films like "A man to remember
" which (unfortunately), closed last night at the Rialtol
Here was a real gem, a true work of art, and yet aa far as
we can learn had not been heralded as such. At least it had
to play here second fiddle, in a two-reel program, to such a
complete wash-out, as Fredrick March and Virginia Bruce in
"There goes my heart", at the Craterian.
There was no excuse for the latter, except to waste the tal
ents of two excellent artists, on a dish of warmed over chop
suey.
While Edward Ellis and Anne Shirley in this simple, but
authentic and moving story of a small town country doctor,
hit the high spots of Hollywood production, for at least six
months, in fact in the judgment of this amateur critio it's
nothing less than a five-star classic.
NOT that the story was so new, the rather familiar theme
of the lovable and impractical country doctor indifferent
to making money, consecrated to relieving suffering and saving
human lives. But the TREATMENT, was so skillful, so intelli
gent, so restrained, not a false note, nor a sentimental bobble
from the first flicker to the last, a thing of flesh and blood,
from the start.
IN short whoever wrote and directed this "A man to remem
ber" had brains, taste, dramtio genius, just aa whoever
wrote and directed "There goes my heart" either-possessed
none of these qualities, or didn't think it necessary to use them.
Of course the answer will
lose money and the latter will
alibi.
In that direction this department however is from Missouri.
We have yet to hear anyone who would pay a nickel to see
that Mitrch-Bruee opus again, and yet to hear of anyone who
WOULDN'T walk a mile for another "A man to 'remember.'
And we don't believe Medford's taste for movies is essen
tially different from that of any
the United States.
Entirely from the mercenary standpoint, vulgar dollars
and cents this column is convinced Hollywood is missincr a
bet, in not putting out MORE
unknown artists like Edward

March and Bruce in twiddle twaddle like "There goes my

Fascism Marches On!

significance. For example: ,
Dispatches from Paris claim Premier Daladier, has won a
great victory for his democratio government, by breaking the
back of a general strike by the use of the army.
Dispatches from Bucharest, Rumania, claim the outlawed
"Fascist Iron Guard" has suffered a crushing defeat by the
"masB killing" of Codrenau (which sounds like a drink),
Runiuiiiu'g "Little Hitler", and 13 of his followers, also a
great victory for the government, under King Carol.
Taking these two reports at their face value, one would con
clude that in both instances, the cause of totalitarianism
(Fascism in one instance, Communism in another), has suffered
a definite set-back.
But we doubt if any competent historian looking as histor
ians must, beneath the surface, will agree with such a con
clusion. POR what is Fascism I Essentially a despotism, directed by
one man, with the support of the army. That is also Com
munism, with this difference, Fascism strongly opposes any
dictatorship of the proletariat, Communism upholds it.
In other words when Premier Daladier, granted dictatorial
powers, crushes a general strike by calling out the army, he
becomes to all intents and purposes a Fascist ruler, and nothing
is more certain than that the more vigorously the workers of
Franco resist, the more certain a Fascist government will be.
NOMINALLY King Carol is putting down a Fascist insnrree-
tion, but only nominally. For ho is practically speaking a
dictator now with the army behind him, and while he found it
expedient to liquidate the "iron guard", labor and workers
will never find Mngda's boy friend, losing any sleep in their
bohalf.
So while the headlines indicate Fascism is losing ground
abroad, approximately the exact
movement at least has started
Fascism extends unbroken, from

A Tragedy
DFORD'S first tragedy
edfcird midnight plane
to have been a tragedy of errors.
Of course, for the exact story, one should await the official
report, hut it appears clear that had the passengers stayed in
the enhin of the plane instead of climbing outside, they would
have been saved.
Had the ship landed practically anywhere but where it
did, at the foot of a high precipitous cliff, there would have
been no lives lost.
lliiil tlie skipper of a nearby ship, USED his head, instead
of losing it, no doubt a rescue would have been made, "within a
few minutes after the forced landing.
Such tragedies are deplorable enough under ANY circum
stances but when the loss of life appears needless, they arc
particularly hard to take.
Incidentally we venture to say passenger planes, in another'
10 years, will no more be allowed to fly without life belts and i
parachutes than passenger liners are now allowed to sail with- '
out life preservers and life boats!
