" Gene Gagliardi, bowling's 1037-88
Singles world champion, will appear
In exhibition games against the
cream of loca pln-upsetters Friday
night at the Medford alleys, starting
at 8 o'clock.
- Medford bowlers who will furnlah
competition for the man who
rolled 280-277-208 for a: 749 triple to
cop the 1087 A.B.O. singes cham
pionship, will be Mrs. Roy Prultt,
George Ends, Roy Prultt. Prank
Ren gs tort f and Earl Rcltsma.
Gagliardi will give a free lecture
and instructions at 4 p. m. Friday,
to which all Medford bowlers are in
vited to attend. This will also be
held In the Medford alleys.
; Thfl champion says you can loara
more In the pit than you can on the
alleyB. From the pit you observe
a bowler's faults, such as his ap-
proach to the foul line, his swing and
delivery, and you are In a better
position to see the course of the
ball as It takes the English in Its
approach to the head pin. "By
watching the mistakes of other maple
crashers, I soon learned to correct
my own errors," said Gene In a recent
Interview. Twenty years ago he was
pln-settor.
. "I went out of my way to watch
all the great bowlers perform, and
picked up many valuablo pointers
here and there, but I soon learned
that in order to be a great bowler,
One must concentrate' on each and
very ball dellvored. That la one of
tbs real secrets of becoming a class
4 star," be explained.
Gene Is of Italian parenthood. He
Is small and weighs only 125 pounds,
whtcb makes him the smallest man
to ever win a world's A.B.C. title. He
lis 1 on a 20-woefc exhibition tour
through the country, and to date
has averaged 213 per game.

Duke Defenders Get Rough
With West Coast Writers
DURHAM, N. C. Dec. lv (AP) The coast-to-coast broadcast of crit
icism and sarcasm over Duke university's selection as the eastern rep
resentative in the Rose Bowl game against Southern California provoked
rebuttal today of defending Carolina sporto writers.
Shortly after the announcement of i
the selection Monday night, Pacific
coast sports writers kicked off that
the sentiment there had favored
Texas Christian for the invitation.
Today the writers on" the more tur
bulent Atlantic side, amid a few pun
returns, off-tackle slants and slams
bordering on unnecessary roughness,
retaliated with a drive of words that
apparently closed the first quarter
In a scoreless tie.
A spokesman from the Duke Chron
icle, undergraduate publication, sur
veyed campus sentiment and came
up with the finding: "Consensus of
Duke campus opinion Is that west
coast sports writers are entitled to
their opinions."
Replying to California writers who
implied Duke's offense was no great
shakes, Edward V. Mitchell wrote In
the Durham Herald that "one thing
Is certain, the Southern California
football team surely is no world-
beater. It has been, beaten twice this
season, and in one of those games
by a second-rate Southeastern con
ference aggregation. University of
Alabama. ... A team that goes
through nine contests, such as those
Duke played, and Isn't beaten, tied
or scored upon must have some
thing."
Andy Cates suggested In the Win-
strom -Salem Journal "If California's
John Q. Public wants to see Texas
Christian, the Sugar bowl promoters
will be only too happy to sell them
tickets."
