get State Treaaurer Rufua C. Holman
to reveal when he will leave for
Washington, D. O.
Senntor-EHwrt Holman said be did
not want to leave Salem until the
state audit of the treasurer's office
Is complete "because people might
thick X was absconding with state
funds."
The governor Is particularly anxi
ous to know because If Holman re
signs before January 9, the governor
will appoint the new treasurer.

When Rufua C. Holman comes to
Washington In .January a Oregon's
Junior senator, he will make his head
quarters In a suite of offices occupied
by two former Oregon senators.
He has been assigned suite 34B
In the senate office building, three
comfortably large room overlooking
the fountnlned court of the stately
structure flanking the east wing of
the capltol building.
Senator Alfred Hcumes moved Into
the offices when he come to Washing
ton last February to succeed Fred
erick Stelwer, who resigned after It
years because of 111 health. Reames'
term ran only until the November 8
general election, when he was suc
ceeded by Alex O. Barry. Barry re
ceived the name office assignment
snd he Is expected In Washington
next month to look ove& the quarters
he may occupy until January 3 when
Holman takes over.

Reames and Barry "Inherited" two
members of Senator Stelwer's offlco
staff, capable Secretary Doris Bounds
and Robert Parkman, who Is regarded
as one of the finest legislative experts
on the capltol bill.
Mrs. Bounds Is expected to retire
to home and fireside when Holman
takes office something she had been
wanting to do for some time. Her
husband Is Roger Bounds, head of
the work progress administration's
division of Investigation.
It Is expected that Parkman will
continue on with Holman. Parkman
served seven years with the late
Nicholas Longworth, speaker of the
houso, and seven years with Senator
Steiwer. His reputation as an au
thority on legislation and Its proper
form is widespread.
Assignment of an office to the new
Oregon senators was entirely arbitrary
as newcomers are nothing more than
"freshmen" In the eyes of their col
leagues. They take "the leavings" In
offices, committees and seats on the
senate floor.
Holman Safe
For Instance, had any one wanted
the offices Holman will occupy, he
would have them and Holman would
hava to take aomethlng else. How
ever, once an assignment Is msde It
Is never ehsnged, unless a senator
after gaining aome seniority, desires
t move Into more desirable and
racant quarters.
The new Oregon senator, however,
will have little reason to complain
about hta new office, unless he feels
It Is too far from ths senate subway.
Tha quarters are well arranged, light
and nicely furnished.
Holman will find that being sen
ator has certain advantages. For
Instsnce, If he Is In a hurry for an
elevator he merely has to buss the
bell three times. The elevator boy
will whls by waiting customers to
pick up and deliver the senator.
Then he can ride to his work
aomethlng that a house member Is
unable to do. A high speed, single
rail electric train operates In the
subway linking the senate office
building with the senato wing of the
eapltul. Here sgaln. three sharp
rings of a bell that sounds like a fire
alarm will bring service.

As a senator, Holman will be able
to est in a private dining room, away
fnim the prying eyes of a curious
public. Or he may dine with the
"common people" m another dining

Decoration of city streets for the

was announced by the Jackson Coun
ty Chsmber of Commerce. The work
will be done by the city superinten
dent's department in cooperation
with the chamber of commerce.
Formal Christmas opening will be
held on December 3 by which time It
Is expected that all the city decora
tions will be In place. On that day
stores will unveil their Christmas
windows,
The Yuletlde program prepared by
the chamber of commerce Includes:
December 8 at 3:15 p. m. Senior
high school girls drum cqrps will per
form In the area at the west side
of the chamber of commerce and
afterward march through the down
town business section.
December 13 Til a same program
will be duplicated by the Junior high
school girls drum corps.
To Sing carols
December 33 Kiddy party at the
chamber of commerce. Children will
be given candy and favors by Santa
Claus. If the weather Is clear, Santa
Claus will fly over Medford, landing '
at the airport whence he will be mo
tored to the chamber of commerce.
