dinner and all the trimmings was
served by the hostess. Mr. and Mrs.
Grow, Mr. and Mrs. Young were also
supper guests of Mr. and Mrs. Boyer
In the evening.
Mr. and Mrs. C. E. Bellows will have
an all day shower party at their
home, Novcmbor 17, for Mrs. Ben
jamin Bellows. All the neighbors and
friends sre cordially Invited. Bring a
covered dish for the dinner to be
served at noon, and have a good old-
fashioned visit with our neighbors.

W, R. Lamb Is doing some carpen
try work at the school bouse for the
school board. The school board has
had some more shale gravel hauled
a the school grounds. Mr. James Twe
dell did the hauling. He also hauled
some shale for W. K. Lamb for the
driveway.

The annual school census completed
recently shows a total of 34 children
In this school district, number 34. Of
this number IS attend the grade
school and five attend Jacksonville
high school.
Paul Chesnut, son of Mr. and Mrs.
Stnnley Chesnut, arrived home No
vember 8 from Steward, Alaska,
where he was employed on a rail
road alnce last April.
Mr. and Mrs. Chesnut and family
' now reside In the house belonging
to Mr. and Mrs. Ivan Dnvles who
are making their home In Medford
this winter.
At a school meeting October 31
the budget for the 10.16-30 school
year was adopted by the voters and
Mrs. John Black elected director to
aerie the term of Ivan Davlea who
resides In Medford.
Mr. and Mra. Horry Avers of Cen
tral Point were guests November 0
at the home of Mr. and Mrs. John
Black.
Mr. and Mrs. Charlie Madsen
moved their camp outfit home from
the locking camp on Beaver creek
November 6 and were supper guests
of Mr. and Mrs. John mack. Novem
ber 7 Mr. and Mrs. Msdsen departed
to spend a few days at the home
of Mr. and Mrs. Lauls Culy at Beaver
ereek.

Twenty-three members of Live Oak
grange met at the hall, November 7,
and elected new offlcera for another
year. Those elected were Frank Hall,
master; George Hutchlns, overseer;
steward, Lloyd Miller; assistant stew
ard, Emest Renklns; lady assistant
steward, Mrs. Llbby Renklns; gate
keeper, John Flemmlng: secretary,
Nora Walt; treasurer, Lora Carter;
chaplain, Mary Hutchlns; lecturer,
Mary Matttson. The three Oraces
are Mrs. R. Hullng. Marie Block and
Mrs. Duesham. The executive com
mittee Is Otto Fuhrman, Perry Walt
and Rollln Stlehl. Mrs. Lelah Murry
and Mrs. Florence Botkln who were
former members here were welcome
visitors. Thejadles now belong to
the Bonanza grange.
One name was presented for mem
bership. A baby girl came to stay at the
home of Mr. and Mrs. Harlan Belcher,
October 30, and she Is very welcome
as the other children are three small
boys,
Mrs. Faye Stlehl was honored with
a shower at the aid meeting, Novem
ber 4, held at the home of Mrs. Har
old Van Duker. About 33 ladles were
present and Mrs. Stlehl received
many beautiful and useful gifts. -
Mr. and Mrs. James Whipple and
Mr. and Mrs. Orral Randleman were
Medford shoppers Thursday.
A number of the high school stu
dents took part In three one-act
plays given at the auditorium Thurs
day evening. Everyone of the stu
dents did their sets well and the
plays were enjoyed by a packed house.
Clvlo Improvement club met at the
pleasant home of Mrs. Kate Mc
Invaln. Eleven ladles enjoyed tho
meeting. After regular business meet
ing Mrs. Fowler gave a travelogue of
her trip to Scotland telling of the
beautiful memorial the Scots have
for the boys who lost their lives In
the World war. At the close of the
meeting tea and cookies were served
by the hostess.
Tuesday's election was very quiet
here with only about two-thirds of
the registered voters voting. The city
ticket had no opposition. Rollln
mayor; E. E. Milter, treasurer and
William Call, recorder, were all re
elected, while Tom Wilson, Martin
Burkhart, Dave Oelvln, Tom Smith
and Andy Klleth were all re-elected
councllmen. Harry Hill was the only
new councilman elected. Sam Sandry,
Harry White, Lelah Milton, Lora Car
tar and Mrs. Sam Sandry were on
the election board. Frank Hall, Har
old Nourse, Belle Hart, Andry White
and Myrtle Whipple were on the
counting board.
Mra. Lelah Murry and Mrs. Florence
Botkln returned to their home at
at Bonanza Saturday after spending
a week visiting friends here. Trey
were entertslned at the Fuhrman,
Trotter, Beck and Whipple homes.
Mra. Minnie Ouy, Miss Nell Penlne
and Herbert Lewis, teachers, enjoyed
the week-end vacation away from
Rogue River,
Mrs. Elizabeth Fowler spent the
weekend with friends In Ashland.
Work has begun on the new hieh
school and work will soon start on

years, was here November 8 to serve
as Judge on the election board.
Mrs. Relnklng was re-elected di
rector of the Oold Hill Irrigation
district November 8. The election was
held at the Riviera store. Those serv
ing on the beard were Lyndal Jac
obs, Mrs. Thome and Mrs. Badley.

Grants Pass nobles of Hlllah Temple
of the Shrine are rushing prepara
tions for the ceremonial to be held
here November 10.
In fee and colorful garb, the
.Shrlners will "Invade the sacred do
main of the Cavemen and hold a fall
ceremonial under the leadership of
Illustrious Potentate Austin B.
Brownell," says the "Red Fez," of
ficial publication of Hlllah T?mple.
The Josephine county fairgrounds
buildings have been selected for the
affair, second ever to be held at
Grants Pass. The first was staged
20 years ago. HJUh Temple's mem
bership extends as far nor'.h as Eu
gene, east to Lake county, west to
the Pacific, and south Into Cali
fornia. The ceremonial program will be
launched at 2 p.m., when quaking
novices will be registered by Re
corder R. E. Dedrlck. After a business
session, a parade will be held on
the streets of the city, beginning at
Fifth and A streets and ending at
the city park. Rex Barnctt will be
in charge of the parade, featuring
the divan, uniformed units, nobility
and novices.
Noble L. M. Mitchell will welcome
Shrlnors at a hospitality room after
the parade, and the traditional ban
quet will follow.
The Temple's band will entertain
with a concert, the patrol will show
the newest maneuvers, and the drum
and bugle corps will perform for the
entertainment of the nobles.
The reception of Illustrious Poten
tate Austin B. Brownell and his di
van and presentation of past poten
tates, will precede the Induction of
novices, who will be led over the
scorching sands for the enjoyment of
the assembled nobles.
As a special feature, new to Hlllah
ceremonials, there will "be a midnight
Jamboree.
CITY LEAGUE PRESIDENT
WILL FINISH OUT TERM
MARSHFTELD, Nov. 10. (AP)
Although tendering his resignation.
Mayor Charles H. Hugglns. president
of the League of Oregon Cities, will
continue to serve the league until
the end of the year. Hugging was
defeated for re-election aa mayor at
last Tuesday's election.
The executive committee of the
league asked him to continue his
work for allocation of revenues from
the state gasoline tax fund to the
cities.
DOG BEATER SENTENCED

victed In municipal court cf beating
a dog to death, Stanley Bogley was
sentenced by Judge Jultus Colin yes
terday to serve 30 Saturdays and
Sundays ministering to canine waifs
at the Portland dog pound.

notified the union claims "full au
thority over all building superinten
dents." The letter declared Rockefeller's
excavation oglers at Rockefeller Plaza
were "actually superintending" a
new building project there and "to
avoid any Jurisdictional disputes
that may arise between your organi
zation and ours," he should accept

PORTLAND. Ore., Nov. 14. (AP)
Charles A. Sprague, Oregon's governor-elect,
told several hundred
Portlandera at a chamber of com
merce luncheon Monday that he In
tended to tackle the problems of the
state In a "realistic manner" and
warned that they could not be solved
by rigid conformance to Inflexible
political beliefs.
He repeated campaign declarations
that he was and would continue to
be progressive in Ideas and conserva
tive In finances.
He said his realization of the
problems facing him tempered any
exultation be might feel at his vic
tory, but quipped "for one who so
recently had one foot In the grave
and another on a banana peel. I do
feel pretty good." Such a remark
had been made of Sprague by Secre
tary of the Interior Harold L. Ickes.
RIOTING IN CAIRO PUTS
STUDENTS IN HOSPITAL
CAIRO, Egypt. Not. 15. CAP)
Violent claahes between student sup
porters of the WAPD (nationalist)
party and the government occurred
at the University of Oiza today dur
ing ceremonies commemorating the
death of seven students In the 1939
disturbances.
More than 100 students were
slightly Injured end seven were in
hospitals seriously wounded by sticks
and stones.
Held In Fraud
TACOMA. Wash., Nov. 13. (AP)
Thomas J. McPharland, 48, Puyal
lup. Wash., WPA timekeeper, left for
Los Angeles Sunday In custody of
a deputy sheriff from that city to
answer a fraud charge. He was ar
rested here November J by deputy
sheriffs at the request of California
authorities. McPharland Is accused of
having defrauded a Los Angeles wo
man out of 61,600.

ternoon for Mrs. Eugenia L. Atkin
son, 88, who passed away Snturdav
at her home. Mrs. Atkinson, who had
resided here for 60 year3, was Lorn
July 31. 1850, In Parma. N. Y. She
had been 111 for 15 years.
She was a charter member of the
Ashland Order of the Eastern Star
and a l:ng-tlme member of the local
Presbyterian church.
Surviving are three sisters, Mrs.
Susie Allen and Mrs. Clara E. Payne,
Ashland, and Mrs. Fanny McMlltlan,
Vancouver, B. C; two nieces, Lottie
Owen and Mirjorte Sparkman, both
of Seattle, Wash., and a nephew,
Glenn Owen, Republic, Mo.
