Various Species Taken Out
of Rogue River National
. Forest for Southern Ore
gon Exposition Exhibit
BIO APPLEOATB, Not. 11, (8pl.)
Living trees from the Rogue River
national forest an being aclentlfl
eally uprooted and ahlpped for exhi
bition In the Shasta Cascade Won
derland building at the Oolden date
International exposition opening Feb
ruary 18. The first shipment from
the Applegate was trucked out Tues
day. Trees from the Applegate district
Included three madronos, five maples,
three Oregon ashes and four quinine
eherry bushes. In the Bead Indian
section two mountain hemlocks and
five western yewwoods were selected.
The Klamath national fore alao Is
sending tree exhibits.
The process of obtaining the trees
without Injury and of enabling them
to continue living and growing for
the next year la artificial surround
ing la an Intricate one. Cordy Sun-
derman of Medford, landscape archi
tect for the Rogue River national
forest, was here this week supervising
the tree digging.
Selected by Port
The trees In the Applegate district
were selected early In September by
Ranger Lee C. Port. At that time
deep trenches were dug around the
trees to enable workmen to out off
the lateral roots. The raw root-ends
were painted with aaphaltlc tree
paint as a protective measure against
rot and other diseases.
The trees are dug with clumps of
dirt clinging to the roote, which are
encased in wooden boxes. The boxes
come In sections. They are placed
In the trench surrounding the tree,
and bolted together. By means of a
Jackscrsw the trees are lifted from
the earth, any persistent bottom
roots cut, and the false bottom la
bolted on the box encasing the soli
and roots. The pores of the bark
are sealed with a dowax spray and
the trees are wrapped, body and
limbs, In burlap. Beventy-nlne hun
dred yards of burlap have been pur
chased for the wrapping. The troes
were to be shipped to San Francisco
on flat cars, two on a car, loaded
at the Southern Pacific, yards at
Medford.
Selection of well shaped trees wis
difficult, the local ranger said, In
that they had to be located In access
of trucka and grown In the open
away from tree clusters. Smallest
trees, the quinine cherry, are from
four to six feet In height. The tallest
trees are 30 feet. This small section
of the forest la only s minor portion
of the vest exhibit typical of the
southern Oregon and northern Cali
fornia areas which Is being prepared
by the Shasta, Cascade Wonderland
association.

LOST COLONIES
OF REICH YIELD
FRANCE LITTLE
By Ralph Helnten
United Press Staff Correspondent
PARIS (UP) Germany's demand
for return of pre-war colonies Is
deemed of greater concern to France
from a political and military view
point than economically.
When the World war ended and the
victorious Allies split up Germany's
oversess empire of more than a mil
lion square miles, France did not
reap any outstanding economic gains.
It got two-thirds of Togoland (the
only German pre-war colony which
paid its own way) and about four
fifths of the Cameroone.
As German West African posses
sions, the Cameroone had about 191,-
000 square miles area and Togoland
33,000 square miles. If the Third
Reich regained all or part of these
areaa. Fuehrer Adolf Hitler would
have a foothold In Africa on which
he might develop Important sub
marine and aviation bases that would
worry both Britain and France and
would be leas than 8,000 miles from
South America.
From a practical standpoint,
France's colonial wealth lis in ool
onles other than those taken from
Oermany, Morocco, Tunisia, Algeria,
Indo-Chlna and New Caledonia pro
vide mineral and agricultural wealth
and furnish markets for many' mil
lions of dollars worth of French In
dustrial exports annually.
Hark! A Rustling
PASADENA, Cel. (UP) Police of
ficials were especially grateful to a
woman who telephoned them that
she could hear a rustling In the
bushes in her yard and asked If they
would Investigate. Two motorcycle
officers responded, crept cautiously
Into the bushes and that night they
had 'possum for their midnight moal.

driving an automobile and trailer
to new "diggings," discovered the
trailer on fire. Unable to unhook It,
their only alternative to keep the
flames from spreading to the auto
mobile was by fast driving, to outrun
the flames. This they did.

Our Mrs. McRae has been asked so often how
she prepares the Swedish Meat Balls served
at our Fountains that we are printing the
recipe.
SWEDISH MEAT BALL
1 pound ground Steer Beef
2 slices Home Purity Bread
2 or 3 tablespoons butter
1 can Del Rogue tomato juice
2 medium size onions
Salt and pepper
Soak bread in enough milk to make it into
a soft wet dough. Beat the eggs, then thor
oughly mix the meat, dough, beaten egg, salt
and pepper and roll into small meat balls.
Roll the meat balls in flour and brown thor
oughly in sizzling hot bacon fryings, turning
until browned all over.
Add the tomato juice, the two onions diced
and cook to a thick brown gravy seasoned to
taste. Allow to simmer slowly until meat
thoroughly cooked, stirring frequently to pre
vent meat sticking to skillet.
We're serving them at the Fountains tomorrow.
