patrol bombers to defend America'

the standpoint of the great circle sea
routes. Rugged mountains preclude
the possibility of the baae's capture
by a land force.

ment may be made by building up
the sunken reefs with sa waits, thus
creating virtually a land-locked an
chorage for fleet units.
Surrey Made latt Summer
Navy engineers completed a survey
of the base late last summer. It 1
understood the physical conditions
disclosed In the survey proved the
alto well-chosen. No obstacles were
found, It Is said, that might Interfere
with the developments planned.
Concrete ramps, hangars, shops and
other fncllltles will be built for the
100 or more planes that could operate
from the base. An area In Women's
bay will be dredged so that aircraft
carriers can enter with eaae. A field
for land planes also will be leveled.
High land aurroTindlng the base Is
suitable for anti-aircraft fortifica
tions. The Island la situated In a central
geographical position from the tip
of the Aleutian Islands to the Cana
dian border. It haa a mild climate
that remits from the warm Japanese
current. The harbors are free of Ice
virtually tho year around.
To Accommodate 1.200
Accommodation for 1.200 officers
and men will be provided.
The Japonskt Island base, directly
across Sitka sound from the town of
Slt-ka, will have the responsibility of
defending southeastern Alaska. It is
considered essential yet subordinate
to the Kodiak Island base, and as a
result probably will have a smaller
force of planes.
Japonskl Island formerly was used
for a naval radio station. It waa
commissioned as a permanent "air
baae June 1. 1038. with a permanent
personnel of fire officers and 110
enlisted men. Six bombers have op
erated from the base the last year
So far approximately $200,000 has
been spent for Improvement of the
bae. which will be enlarged so that
at least 100 planes can be handled
without congestion. It Is understood.

SAN FRANCISCO ( UP ) Discovery
of the high vitamin A content of
shark liver oil, particularly valimble
to poultry, has resulted In the de
velopment of shark fishing as a ma
jor Industry of California.
Shark fishing has Its greatest ac
tivity In San Francisco Biy and
near-bv waters of the Pacific ocean.
More than 35 fishing boats based
here, operate out of this harbor dally
and fish with "long lines" for the
gray predatory fish that raise havoc
with the striped bass and other game
fish In California salt waters.
Fishermen receive from 20 to $40
a ton for sharks, depending upon
the species caught. The small dog
shark Is the least valuable while the
larger deep sea variety, whose fins
are used for soup, brings the highest
price.
State fish and game officials, said
more than 100 tons of sharks worm
approximately $3000 to tho fishermen,
have been unloaded In son Francisco
during a single day. The shark meat
other than the liver Is mane into
fertilizer.
Officials said the oil from shark
livers Is packed Into five-gallon cans
and shipped to refineries where It Is
converted Into by-product tj provide-
vitamin A for the California
poultry industry.
Special permits for the special type
fishing gear used to catch the sharks
have been Issued by the state fish

The permits requlro that fishing be
done within a restricted zone; that
hooks be baited with salt fish, and
that the fishermen retain a boat and
operator for the use of the marine
warden In the supervision of the fish
ing. Most species of shark, according to
Scofleld, are heavy fish caters and It
Is good conservation to reduce the
number and destroy the advantage
this species has over other fish
caught for food or sport.

A program of speaking, music and
other numbers will be presented im
mediately after the barbecue, which
will start about 12:30. The sand
wiches are free to all comers, and
coffee will also be servrd. Guests
are requested to bring their own
cups, aa the club 1 unable to fur
nish them. However, paper cups will
be available for a small sum. Salads,
cake and pie will also be sold for
a nominal sum.
Following the program, a rifle
