The cry "communism," directed by
republtcsns and even by some demo
crats against the topmast democratic
candidates echoed across the contin
ent much as It did in the memor
able California campaign of 1034.
Outrivaling 1034's "epic" Issue, the
30-every-Thursday plan was a di
rect "ham and eggs" Issue for about
1,000.000 California oldstera clamoring
for more pension money.

such force that It, too, rippled
across the country, giving rise to talk

sion systems.

quired to take the warrants at face
value. State, county and municipal
employees would have to accept up
to one-half their salaries In these
warrants.
In Large Figures
Opponents figured the state would
have to Issue about 1, 000 ,000 ,000
worth of warrants a year, and If they
changed handa once a week about
t80.000.000.000 worth would have to
be spent to keep them all going.
That figure exceeds the national In
come by SIS.OOO.OOO.OOO to 20,000,
000.000. The opposition said the real result
would be refusal of business firms to

Proponents Insisted only a small

and Ellis E. Patterson, democratic
nominee for dleutenant governor,
were communists.
Those named denied the charges
caustically, other democratlo sym
pathlxers commented with a measure
of ridicule. California American Le
gion leaders disavowed responsibility
for Knowles' testimony.
Like 1034
On Its face, the situation looked
something like a parallel to 1034, but
the democratic party setup was much
different this time.

nomination for governor on an "end

ployed. Downey ran for lieutenant
governor, with Sinclair,

Sinclair lost, to conservative re
publican Oov. Prank P. Merrlam, who

Despite President Roosevelt's dis
approval of the 30 pension plsn,
which Downey supported In the pri
mary, the chief executive termed
Downey "a real liberal In mind and
heart" and asserted It would be
cslsmlty" for California to elect to
the senate a "dyed-ln-the-wool re
actionary."
Downey's republican opponent Is
Philip Bancroft, Harvard-educated,
big-scale farmer and pre-prlmary
critic of New Deal policies.
Olson snd Downey are avowed New
Dealers and the democrats have an
advantage of almost 2 to 1 over the
republlcns In registration.
Beside the pension Issue the voters
will pass upon a measure which
would restrict picketing and regu
late the conduct of unions In strikes.
Labor has opposed this ss a threat to
union existence.
LOCAL OPTION UP FOR
DECISION TUESDAY IN
3 COUNTIES, 3 CITIES

names similar to counties in which
they are not located.

The question of local option dikes
against the retail liquor trade will
be decided by three counties and
inree cuies at uregons general elec
tion Tuesday.
Two other cities, the only munici
palities to retain prohibition when
the state Joined in national repeal,
will vote on measures to legalize
sale of Intoxicating liquors under
state liquor control commission pro
visions.
Local option bills will be passed
upon by Tillamook, Clackamas and
Yamhill counties. Yamhill defeated a
similar proposal four yean ago. Mo
lalla. Clackamas county. Dayton,
Yamhill county, and Brownsville,
Unn county, will hold municipal
elections on the same Issue.
Repeal movement backers In Philo
math. Benton county, and Mewberg.
Yamhill county, asserted morals had
not Improved with local option.
Business men said they had lost
money and prestige because of the
ban.
Regardless of the county vot.

may go dry. On the other hand. If
a majority of county voters favor
