We found out several things from
Bob Pulton, head of the three-man
crew applying gold leaf to the bronze
figure,
The leaf. Fulton said, will endure
for at least a generation, when new
gold will have to be applied. In. the
meantime the statue can be washed
with a cloth and water whenever
necessary.
The gold, pounded so thin that any
hr7j win blow It awav. Is applied
directly to wet slalng, either by hand I
or with a small brush. If the nrusn
Is used, It Is first rubbed In the hair
,n on atatt, nlectrtcltv enouah to
life the metal. It Is then smoothed
Irito place with absorbent cotton,
which gives a fine polish. No ham
mers are used In putting the gold In
place. .
Only one thlcknoss of gold Is ap
plied. A three-by-four Inch piece of
the stuff looks expensive, but when
ground between the thumb and fin
gers It rolls into a ball so tiny It
can hardly be seen,
Pulton soouted the story that a
30-dollsr gold piece, pounded out,
would cover the entire statue. It
would oover a major portion of It,
he sold, but not all. He refused to
make an estimate of the. weight or
value of the gold to be used on the
entire project.
Fulton said the present Job was
the largest he ever worked on. and
as far as he knows Is the largest ever
attempted west of Chicago.
He also said that In the three
weeks slneo the work began, this
pudgy correspondent was the only
one to muster the energy to acalo
the shaky scafoldtng to the statue's
head.
"Most of them," he said looking

Mr. Mahoney said the state needs
a Democratic senator to work hand

Telling his audience that he would
abolish child labor forever, and that
he is in favor of a suitable pen
sion for old people, the speaker said
th present state pension plan li a
disgrace to humanity and that it ia
the definite obligation of the fed
eral government to accept an ade
quate pension plan. The candidate
stated he Is In faror of a transac
tion tax of 2 per cent to meet pen
sion payments. Ha. declared he had
been a staunch supporter of the
Townsend plan since Its Inception
and opposed to the present social
security pension plan.
In speaking of war Mahoney said
he Is bitterly opposed to the United
States entering Into any foreign en
tanglements and is in favor of tak
ing the profits out of war. He stated
that the United States flag should
not be used for protection "such as
in the case of the reoent Panay In
cident,' Mr. Mahoney said preservation of
the Ideals of Americanism should be
safeguarded by never allowing the
ninny "isms" to be planted upon
American soil, concluding that In
following such a leader as President
