Blister Rust Eradication Is
Completed on Rogue For

About 4.000,000 wild gooseberry
and currant bxi.rt.e were eradicated
from 34.000 acre of commercially
TAluable white and auger pine itands
m the blister rust control program
was continued the past season on the
Rogue River national forest.
Work accomplished this year was
summarized In a report prepared by
Conrad P. Weflsela, associate forester
In charge of Oregon blister rust op
erations. "This year's work brings the total
acreage covered on the Rogue River
national forest to 180,050 acres and
practically completes the initial con
trol program on this forest," Mr.
Wessela said. "Occasional rapid re
eradication programs In the future
will Insure these fine stands of pine
from the dnmage of this destructive
tree disease."

Wild gooseberry and currant bushes
are the alternate host plants of the
virulent blister rust disease which
threatens to exterminate the white
and ugar pine timber of the west.
Blleter rust control aetlvltles were
begun this year In May and were
completed the latter part of beptera
ber. About 460 men were engaged in
the work, living at four camps. All
workers, excepting supervisors and
a small group of trained technicians,
were recruited from the relief rolls of
Med ford, Klamath Palls, Grants Peas,
Roneburg and Marshfleld through co
operation of the local relief and WPA
. offices, Mr. Wesaela'a summary re
port stated.
Subsistence supplies and equip
ment necessary for the maintenance
and operation of the camps were pro
cured l&nt?ly from local concerns
and dispatched to camps through lo
cal headquarters.
