MARTIN TO STAY
OUT OF CAMPAIGN
FRIENDSDECLARE
Sprague Supporters Feel
Governor's Endorsement
Would Help Hess Ickes
Facing Cool Reception
By Patrt t Harvey, Jr.
SALEM, Oct- 21. (JP) Those who
Zioped Oo vera or Martin would take
part In the gubernatorial raoe be
tween Charles A. Sprague, Republi
can, and Henry L. Hess, Democrat,
night Just aa wet) give up.
During the past two weoks there
has been much talk about a possible
endorsement of 6pregue by the gov
ernor. Here's how It all started.
A eouple of weeks ago the governor
made an offside remark at a press
conference that he had "Just put
some eggs under the old hen and
they would hatch In a few days?
This remark was Interpreted In some
quarters as meaning the executive
would rnme out against Hess, who
defeated htm In the primary.
Meant Moody Report
But Tuesday the bubble burst when
the governor released the Moody rs
port on the prosecution of Orc-K'in's
war on labor terrorism. This was the
hatching of the efjgs.
Persons clone to the governor say
he will stay out of the campaign.
"The governor knows bettor than
to act like a clown tn endorsing
Bprague," one of the persons said.
"We feel, end many prominent
Sprague supporters agree, thai an en
dorsement of Sprague would help
Hess. People jiwt don't like to see
Democrats monkeying In Republican
affairs."
The governor remains bitter toward
Hess, but he doesn't plan to say a
word against him. Martin feels thnt
he has no business taking part In a
campaign In which he isn't Involved
personally.
He never got over Secretary Ickes'
endorsement of Hess during the tur
bulent Democratic primary. Ickes
said Martin was "at heart no New
Dealer.' Martin retaliated by calling
Ickes "Washington's No. 1 thunder
bug and a renegade mugwump Re
publican." Irkes Coming Sunday
Ickes will be In Oregon Sunday,
but the governor won't be on hand
to greet him,
' "If Ickes wants to Inspect the cap
Hot (a PWA project under Ickes) it
will be el'sed, as It always Is on Sun
day. I won't be around to receive
him because I have to go to church,"
the governor said with his famous
twinkle In his eye.
There Is a possibility that Ickes
will make a speech favoring Hess,
whom he has endorsed again. But If
Ickes mentions the governor In an
uncomplimentary manner, the gover
nor probably wilt answer.
"If Ickes spouts off too much, the
governor will take another crack at
him. But the governor's answer will
not mention the candidacies either of
Sprague -or, Hess," a close friend of
the governor said.
No Comment On Report
The governor had no comment on
the report of Ralph E. Moody, whom
he appointed to prosecute labor ter
rorism cases. While the report was a
stinging denunciation of a few labor
leaders who have gone to prison for
labor racketeering. It was virtually
without political significance since
It mentioned no candidates.
The report, however, hinted that
the governor and Moody are behind
the Initiative measure to regulate
picketing and boycotting. Moody
warned that there would be a recur
rence of labor terrorism unless such
legislation were enacted.
Interefit Mystifies
Election bureau officials are hard
pressed to explain why the numbsr
of registered voters will equal or ex
ceed the record total of 648.034 in
the 1030 general election. This would
Indicate that voters are taking mere
of an Interest in the November 8
election than they did In the presi
dential election two years ago.
It Is apparent that the Republicans
will hold a 10.000 to 1S.0OO lead over
the Democrats In tstal registration.
The Democrats never have been ahead
since Civil war days. In the May pri
mary, the O. O. P. had a 16,000 majority.

That Money Question
IS UP AGAIN!
A CUSTOMER asked us, "Why can't I pay
for meat at the meat counter?"
"Because money isnt clean and the
butchers haven't time to wash before serving
every customer," was our answer.
We continued by calling her attention to
a couple of dirty dollar bills the cashier had
taken in a few minutes before. They had
been through many hands and goodness knows
in what kind of pockets.
After our explanation, what had seemed
a minor precaution had become to her a most
necessary safeguard to cleanliness.
Watch how money is handled and see
where it is carried and you too will agree
that the man who bandies your meat should
not handle money in payment for it.
