Lightning Protector.
One of the strange superstitions
about the evergreen plsn, the laurel,
was that It was Immune from being
struck by lightning.
Commonly thought of aa a symbol
of victory, the laurel wreath was
used by th ancient Greek a a
prise In the Pythian game. Roman
emperors also wore the laurel wreath
to Indicate that they were command
era of Rome's vlctorlou army.
One emperor, at least, used laurel
for a different purpose; whenever
he went out in a thunderstorm,

tee at ths Del Monte course recently,
he was pretty much tired out.

had Just driven.

The Howard 4-H clubs will hold
an exhibit and short program at
the Howard achool gym Tuesday.
October 11. at 7:30 p.m. The club
members who attended 4-H club
summer achool at CorvaUl and th
UU fair at Balem will give short
reports. 0. D. Conrad, county 4-H
olub agent, will give the main talk
of the evening and will present
achievement oanls and pin to those
members who have completed the
year's work and to the local leaders.
Everyone In the community la urged
to attend this exhibit of sawing,
cooking and handicraft, and to hear
th report so ss to gsln a better
understanding of what 4-H club
work Is doing for boys and girls, and
to meet the local leaden and county
4-H club agent.

Bobby Barbee won first ribbon on
hla Rhode Island Red chickens, he
exhibited one cockerel and two pul
let. Ban Saltmarah won first for his
three Rhode Islsnd Red pullet. Bob
by Barbs also won first on hi eggs.

Betty Lou Rlech after making such
a showing In Judging livestock. Miss
Rlech also made exceptionally good
showing In her other work In 4-H.
