Mrs. Owen's Father Dies Word has
been received lp Medford of the death
of Eugene Shelby, pioneer resident
of Portland, and for many years the
Wells -Fargo representative In thai
city. Mr. Shelby was the father of
Mrs. Frank Owen, now a resident
New Tork City, who for many
years was a resident of Medford, and
hap many friends here.
Force Reduced Lookouts and
firemen on the Rogue River national
forest were reduced In number to 11
today as hazards decreased In most
sections of the timber lands. The
force had been reduced to nine but

gerous In the Applegate district of

New Anthology Available today
was a new anthology of children's
literature, prepsred by Miss Ollle De
pew, assistant professor of English at
the Southern Oregon State Normal
school in Ashland, and published by
Olnn ft company. The anthology la
intended for use In normal and ele
mentary grade schools. It Is titled
"Children's Literature by Grades and
Types." It contains material for
reading In the first eight gradee.

giving the student or teacher a meas
ure of each grade's vocabulary and
oomprenension. The book also pro
Tides guidance In selecting other
resdlng material for each grade. Miss
Depew, considered an authority on
children's literature, devoted much
time and research to the production
of the anthology.

Joseph A. Nanoe and two children
of Portland are spending several
days in Medford while Mr. Nance
transacts business for the federal
housing administration. Mr. Nance
Is well known In Medford, having
talked before a meeting of the Young
Democratic club several months ago
Legion Meeting Fire Prevention
Week and -Columbus Day will be
observed by Medford post of the
American Legion at its regular semi
monthly meeting In the armory at 8
p. m. tomorow. A special feature
will be presented, commemorating the
discovery of America and talks on
fire prevention will be given by Chief
Roy Elliott and Qeorge Hoard. At
the business session plans will be
carried forward for the Armistice
Day celebration on month from to
day. Prior to the post meeting, the
Legionnaires will enjoy a covered-
dish supper at 6:30. The supper will
be served by the women's auxiliary
under the management of Mrs
