a parade on the turf of all city pig

Last year, Coach Bill Bowerman'a
aggregation socked the Indians, as

pected this evening. Tiger officials
expect a crowd of 3.000 or more to
be on hand for the home dubt of
Medford's big but Inexperienced
eleven.
The Tigers will face off against
the pass-sllnglng, razzle-dazzle In
dians minus their first two fullbacks,
big Louie Thurman and John Sauls
berry. Thurman received a back In
Jury in the Hood River 8 "to 3 tie
last week, and Bowerman Is taking
no chances of the soph getting fur
ther hurt, fiaulesberry waa kicked
tin the leg In practice thla week, and
1s not In starting condition.
As a result of those Injuries, start
ing In the Important fullback posi

Junior who saw aome action last
season and who Is one of the best
forward passers on the squad. Second
In line la Rodney Snead, the half-
pint broken field flash. Thurman
and Baulsberry are probably defi
nitely out of the game, the coach
atated.
Other changes In the Tiger lineup,
from that which opened the Hood
River game, will see Dal Hoffman.
160-pound Junior, starting at left
guard Instead of Frank Jones, who
has a bad cold: Dale Howard, 170
' pound- Junior, opening In Wally Errs
post at right guard: and Don Mon
telth, two-year veteran, holding down
the right end apot In place of dene
Miller, who also Is suffering from
a bad cold. Erl, all-conference guard
last season. Is hobbling around on a
slightly sprained ankle.
Remainder of the Tornado etart
lng lineup will see Bob Verblck at
left end: Al Barrow, 190-pounder,
and Bill Gluts, 330, at the tackles;
John Prentice, 100. at center: dene
McCurly, 183, at the blocking quar

serial contest. Roseburg. sparked by
Left Halfback George Sandera. fig

lateral passes. Medford will sling
straight-ahead power at the Invad

head shots and some razzle-dazzle.

NEW YORK, Oct. 7.-(APl-The

work of "those two youngsters, Hen

American lrsuera close tn on their

Ruppert la following the series and

Ruppert Is glad to see the Yanks
Wangle with the Cubs.
"It makes for keener Interest when
a team like the Cubs comes through.
Instead of the old local rivalry we
have a new Intersect lonal angle that's
pulling In capacity crowds. And of
course we can still set more records,"
By records the colonel means an
other four-game sweep. Such a vtc
tory would give the Yankees an al
most unapproachable mark. Th-y
won In straight games In 1937, U3fl
and 1012. In the latter year against
the Cubs.

BlDy Hulca. Anyway, here
goes:
Med ford -Roseburg. It's two green
teams opposing each other and well
take vanilla. The Tornado showed
lots of mlddle-of-the-fleld power
against Hood River, but no scoring
sock. The boys have been drlllfng
faithfully, however, so let's call the
turn about 20 to 0, favor of the
locals.
Grants Pass -Klamath Palls. Tou
can't do anything here but pick the
Pelicans, but Mr. Pickem has a hunch
It will be close. 13 to 0.
80N8-Orcffon Frosh. Under the
lamps In Grants Pass tonight,
Fran Kberhart's Southern Oregon
Normal rlult will fall to whip the
hnhy Wfftfools. It looks like
13 to 6 victory for the Foftli.
8 tan ford -Wash lng ton State. The
Cardinals should be bettor organised
than they were against Santa Clara
last week, enough so to hand the
Cougars their third straight confer
ence walloping. Stanford 31, W8C 0.
Southern California-Ohio State
Another rap on the noggin for Head
Man Howard Jones and his Trojans.
The Big Ten Buckeyes should do It
to the tune of at least two touch
downs to none for USC.
Washington UCLA. Washington's
Huskies, If they are ever going to live
up to their pro-season press clip
pings, better get started. Pickem
thinks they will against the Bruins.
Washington 7, UCLA 0.
Oregon State-Portland. A tough one
for tho Beavers, one that may prove
too tough. If Portland's aerial circus
clicks there will be some sad Staters
Saturday night. Gotta pick Sttner's
gang, though, 30 to 13.
Sr. Mnry's-l.oyola. And here, we
hope. Is tho weekly nnd Rlgnntlc
upset. They play In l.os Angeles
Sunday, nnd Loyola nil) Inke tn

Santa Clara-Texas A. and M. Any
body who would call the turn against
Santa Clara should be examined for
tnmnlty, but this one will tent Buck
Shaw's Broncs to the limit. A whale
of a game, with SantA Clara winning.
37 to 14.
Dartmouth - Princeton. The Big
Three team can't stop the Green
Wave this year. In fact,' it probably
won't be stepped by anybody. Dart
mouth will cop in easy fashion, 20
or more to zero.
Notre Dame-Georgia Tech. Notre
Dame won't got upset here. lik they
didn't laat week. The Ramblln' Wreck
will be wecked, all right, by about
foxir Irish touchdowns. Tech won't
score.
Harvard -Cornell. Ah. a cinch at

COURAGEOUS DEAN
WALKS 'LAST MILE'
TO LOSE - YET
Once Great ' Pitcher Near
Fame, Holds Diamond
Murderers Then Came
DiMaggio. "
Br HENRY McLEMOFE
(United Preaa Staff Correspondent.)
CHICAGO, Oct. 7. (UP) Dizzy
Dean ahuffled down baseball's "laat
mile" yeeterday.
From the sunshine that bathed
the pitching mound at Wrlgley field
he walked Into the shadows of the
dugout, and on through the green
door that leads to the showers. It
Isn't a very big door; It Isn't cut
very high. Because the shoulders of
the men who pass through It always
are weighted and ssgglng with dis
appointment. Let it be said that Dizzy Dean
walked it gloriously. Inside his
heart he must have known that each
atep he took led him away, perhaps
be on hand for th home debut of
ha loves so well.
He didn't walk the "last mile
alone. In spirit, the spectators of
the second game of the world aeries
between the Cubs and Yanks walked
It with him. Ppr every step he
took the customers, apreclatlve of
his courage, thundered a salute. '
Because the men,1 women and chil
dren had watched one of the great
eat exhibitions of heart and head
and competitive spirit In the history
of baseball.
Thrown against the Yankees, the
murderers of baseball. Dean held
them for seven Innings. Patiently,
carefully, shrewdly and courageously.
Inch by Inch, he snuffed the fuse
of the Yankee bomb.
The Lord knows what with I He
didn't have anything but a change
of pace. First he would throw a
alow ball. Then he would throw
a slower ball. Then he would throw
one so lazy, so soft, so absolutely
devoid of "stuff" thst a handwrit
ing expert sitting In the stands could
have read Ford Frlck'a character
from hla signature on the ball.
For seven Innings he lobbed It up
there. Across thla corner. Then
across that one. One time high, the
next time low. 8ometimes Inside,
sometimes outside They couldn't
hit the "nothing" bsll.
Then In the eighth, with his great
est triumph Just around the cor
ner, the remnant of the great right
arm that used to swlnjr from his
shoulder, gave out. With Crosetti
up in the eighth. Dlz found himself
without even a "nothlm" ball. h.
scarcely could throw the ball to the
Plato. Crosetti stepped Into one and
knocked It Into the stands, scoring
Hoag ahead of him.
No quitter, Dlz came back, for the
ninth. Thla time it was DiMaggio
who set his sights on a aoft floater,
chest high, and pounded It Into the
iana rrom whence there Is no re
turning. That finished Dlz.
