Factories, 12,000 Idle
No Disorder.
DETROIT, Oct. 7. (JPi A United
Automobile Workers' demonstration
for a 33-hour week closed two large
factories here today and left approx
imately 13,000 men Idle.
The main plant of th-i Plymouth
Motor Corp. remained oloaed this
morning when approximately 8,000
employes stood outside the gates and
refused to enter, declaring they
would not work more than 33 hours
weekly.
A short time later the Mack ave
nue plant of the Brlggs Manufactur
ing Co., which employs 9,000 men
making bodies for the Plymouth
plant, also closed, awaiting resump
tion of Plymouth operations.
C. O. Edelen. chief shop steward of
the UAW Plymouth local, said the
demonstration was not a strike and
the men would return to work Mon
day morning at the regular hour. He
said they did not Intend to work
more than 83 hours a week, how
ever. .
The men, many recently recalled
for new modM production, have been
Working 40 hours weekly.
The demonstrators milled around
the gates for more than an hour, but
at 9:30 all of them had left.
Union President Homer Martin an
nounced this week the 32-hour week
would be sought.
In the specific case of Chrysler
Plymouth plants the union claims an
agreement with the management on
the 33-hour question although the
parties have been unable to agree
en details.
The Plymouth management said a
statement would be forthcoming la
ter In the day.
There was no disorder at the plant
although police seized a union sound
car and detained the driver.

GUFFEY'S LETTER

WASHINGTON, Oct. 7. (AP) The
senate campaign expenditures com
mittee ordered further Investigation
today of the authorship of a fund
solicitation letter sent out by the
Pennsylvania Democratic state com
mittee over the name of Senator
Ouffey (D- Pa.)
Chairman Sheppard (D.. Tex.) said
Ouffey had denied all knowledge of
the letter. The committee previously
declared a violation of the law re
st rue ting senators In soliciting po
litical funds would be Involved If
Ouffey had authorized the letter and
It had gone to any person receiving
federal compensation.
TWo Investigators who made a
progress report to the committee were
ordered to return to Pennsylvania
for further Inquiry. Sheppard said
their report would be received at the
committee's next meeting In 10 days.
The committee also ordered con
tinued Its investigation of charges
Involving alleged political activity on
the part of WPA employes In Tennessee.

DUBLIN, Oct. 7 (AP) A vocal
campaign for a plebiscite In north'
em Ireland grew louder today on
both sides of the frontier between
thst region, also known as Ulster
and hitherto loyal to the British
crown, and the Republic of Ireland
(Eire).
Nationalist hopes for reunion of
Ulster's six counties with the rest of
Ireland, whetted by Germany's suc
cessful campaign for the Sudeten
Germans of Czechoslovakia, were
spurred by reports Irish Prime Minis
ter Eamon De Vslera had told British
Prime Minister Chamberlain he be
lieved the time was opportune for a
plebiscite,
De Valera, however, refused to
comment on the reports he had
raised the question of self-determination
for the "Sudeten Irish" in
Ulster when he called on Chamber
lain In London October 4.
NO KNIFE WIELDED
IN STREET FIGHT,
Last Sunday morning's street brawl
in placid Jacksonville headed toward

to the belief, authorities said, that
instead of being stabbed by a knife

round of the free-for-all fight was
fought.
Two of three Camp Applegate CCC
youths brought In for questioning

were released. As the case stands
now two CCC boys and two Jackson
ville youths stand charged with dis
orderly conduct.
The CCC enrollees. Ford J. Slaton.
19, and Harold R. Garrett, 33, are to
be arraigned tomorrow on disorderly
conduct charges. The two Jackson
ville youths. Gall Lusk, 19, and his
brother Calvin, 31, have already
pleaded guilty to disorderly conduct
and are awaiting sentence. All four
are at liberty on their own recogniz
ance. The fight started, the sheriff's of
fice said, when the Lusk brothers
became Incensed upon finding that
their car had been placed against a
fire hydrant while they were at a
dance.

four prisoners who escaped from the

ese forces reached a railway route to
the military heart of China today
and reported a series of gains at
far-distant points of the sprawling
Chinese battleground.
Chinese admitted Japanese cavalry
men had fought their way to the
Pelplng-T'Iankow railway that leads
to the nation's military capital. Han
kow, culminating a 300-mlle. cross
country detour drive that started
four months ago.
Japanese advancing up the Yangt?e
river occupied Klchun, 80 miles down
stream from Hankow, and. far to the
north, four Japanese columns were
converging on the mountain strong
hold of the eighth army, elusive
legions of Chu Teh, Chinese red
Napoleon.
The main Japanese cross-country
