It's at the high school stadium here,
under the bright are lights and on
the fine, green turf. It starts at 8
o'clock sharp, snd upwards of 1000
customers are expected to view pro
ceedings. Pre-game dope points to the Point
ers, big snd tough and rugged, to
win after a hard struggle, but up
sets are the rule rather than the
exception those football days, and
. the local Juniors are girded to the
teeth to upset the applecart of Hul
bert's gang.
Last year the score was 38 to 0
for Central Point. This season,
Coaoh Harrington has brought his
club along rapidly until right now
It Is practically In mid-season form.
The Juniors dropped a 7 to 0 verdict
to Jacksonville high last week, but
looked good In doing It. The future

reach a red-hot stsge tonight and
toss plenty of razzle-dazzle at the
Pointers.
This will be the unveiling of Coach
Rulbert'a 1038 grid creation. The
team has drilled steadily for two
weeks, and Is In great shspe for Its
opening clash. The mentor says the
outfit Is as good, If not better, than
last year's fine team.

CHICAGO. Sept. 30. (P, Charles
Leo Hartnett. making baseball his
tory with the Chicago Cubs, tday
had his rampaging players fired with
the spirit of stretching their winning
streak to 13 gomes in a row by tak
ing the remaining three games of the
season frcm the St. Louis Cardinals.
The Cubs are convinced the Nat
ional league championship Is theirs.
Beating Pittsburgh 10 to 1 yester
day to achieve their tenth straight
victory and their 20th in the last 23
games put the Cubs a game and one
half ahead of the Pirates who came
to Chicago In firtre place Just four
days ago.
Manager Hartnett, his Irish face
tomato red with excitement, was as
happy as a school kid as he entered
the Cubs' 'clubhouse after yesterday's
victory, the third straight over the
Pirates. -t
Hartnett was grinning from ear to
ear, even though the towel he had
wrapped around the torn third finger
on his right hand was streaked with
blood.
Because of Gabby's Injury suffer
ed on a foul tip In the ninth Inning,
the players, at first, were a bit down
cast but Hartnett laughed It off. The
injury may keep Oabby out of two
games.
It was the third time this year
Hartnett had been sidelined by in
juries. Early this season a ball hit
the left wrist, and on August 16 he
fractured his right thumb to be laid
up for a month.
Bill Lee, who turned In an "iron
man" performance by pitching for
the fourth consecutive day, made no
effort to hide the fact he was aweary
pitcher. Because of a tight and tired
arm, he said, he couldn't pitch his
natural way and had to force him
self, which cost him control. Lee
chalked up his 22nd victory against
nine defeats in 40 games.
Gloom as thick as pea soup en
gulfed the Pirates' dressing room af
ter Hrtrtnott's steam-roller had fin
ished Its Job. Three of the four
Pirate pitchers. Rush Bauer s, Cy
Blanton, and Ed Brandt, didn't even
wait for the finish of the game. They
dressed and departed In the seventh
Inning, eacj. shaking his head In a
manner that plainly bespoke their
doubts that the once proud Pirates
would get back to first place.

NEW YORK, Sept. 30. The
New York Yankees, seeking to break
all precedent by winning their third
straight world series, will go Into
action against either the Chicago
Cuba or Pittsburgh Pirates next Wed
nesday firing the same double-barreled
shotgun that has mowed down
the Giants In the last two autumn
arguments.
First, Manager Joe McCarthy will
explode Vernon (Lefty) Gomez at the
National league batters, and then he
will pull the other trigger, Rufus
(Red) Ruffing. If the enemy sur
vives the twin blast and the mop-plng-up
operations of assorted other
Yankee pitchers and still Is acting
belligerent, then Gomez and Ruffing
will be fired again.
That about sums up the Yanks'
pitching strategy. In Ruffing, who
has won 21 and lost' 7 this season,
and Gomez, with an 18-12 count,
the champa own a pair of the great
est f lingers In the game today. To
gether, they form an incomparable
short-series combination. Gomez has
won all five world series games he
has started. Ruffing has won two
and lost one.

Chandler, sensational young star, out
with a bad elbow, it looks like the
Yanks will have only their two aces
to depend upon.
Neither the Cubs nor the Pirates
boasts such a brace of hotshots,
though both have good pitching and
the Cubs figure to do a lot of dam
age with Bill Lee and Clay Bryant If
they qualify for the big doings. Lee,
with 22 wins and 0 losses, and Bry
ant with 19 and 11, have been pitch
ing phenomenal ball during the Cubs'
stretch drive. Only thing, they are
bound to be getting tired, and If th
National league race Is not decided
before Sunday they will go into the
series wobbling around like sleep
walkers. They are the only sure bets
the Cubs have, notwithstanding Dizzy
Dean's good showing against the
Pirates three days ago.
