the Cougars, U. C. L. A. kicked Iowa
around with the same gusto. Thus

nasty than the experts said they
might be. Which makes Saturday's

of baseball really have an elegant

are at least the equal of the quartet
who perform for either the Chicago
Cubs or the Pittsburgh Pirates, who
are heading for a photo finish In the
National league. Aa distance hitters
and run producers they are miles
ahead of their world series rivals.
This despite the fact both the Cubs
and the Pirates havo better-than-
average Infields far the best In
the National league this season
Neither has really a weak snot. Yet
It Is Impossible to rank cither with
the Yankee four aa a deciding factor
in a world series, where sheer power
Is all-Important. Sometimes power
bowa before a rush of great pitching,
but for the most part power Is a com
forting thing to have.
The Yanks, while hitting less than
the Pirates on a group average, really
have done far more damage to oppos
ing pitchers. In other words, they
hit the pay-off punches. Gehrig in
six world series haa compiled a hit
ting average of .371, Including 10
home-runs.

CHICAGO. Sept. 39. (AP) Pitts
burgh's Pirates went Into the third
and last act of a baseball drama at
Wrigley field with the Chicago Cuba
today, grimly aware It was their beat
chance of regaining the lead In the
National league pennant melee.
Knocked half a game out of first
place by Manager Gabby Hartnett's
epic home run In yesterday's duslc,
the Pirates virtually have to get up
off the floor to win the pennant.
And the Cubs have to depend upon
shattered pitching staff to stop
that last stand drive.
Upon the winning depended the
rise or fall of each club's pennant
star, for should the Cubs win they
would shorten the mathematical odds
which have been against them since
they began their great stretch run.
But If the Plratea win, they need
only take three of their four remain
ing games from Cincinnati's Reds to
clinch the pennant, even though the
Cubs take all three of their scheduled
games with St. Lou la.
The Cubs' 6 to 5 triumph yesterday
was their ninth straight and their
19th In the lost 22 games. Thus they
recaptured the front rank position
they have not occupied since early
June and knocked the Pirates out of
the lead for the first time since
July 12.
But the victory put a further strain
on the Cubs' undermanned pitching
staff. Blx men worked for Chicago,
six oi a tired, overworked crew.
Today Russ Bauers, rested and
ready, carried Pittsburgh's hopes to
the mound. Against him the Cubs
pitted BUI Lee, their ace hurler, but
weary one. Lee pitched nine In
nings against the Cardinals Monday,
relieved Dizzy Dean Tuesday and
worked an Inning yesterday.
