national American Legion conven
tion In Los Angela last week, ao
cording to reports of local Legion
naires' whc attended. ' ,
'Through the cooperation of Med
ford packing concerns. Rogue valley
pears were obtained for distribution
at the convention., The pears were
placed where they would do the
most good, full boxes being presented
by Commander Robert Ebel of Med
frd post to national dignitaries, in
cluding Commander Dan Doherty of
Massachusetts and Vice -Commander
Harry M. Johnson of Montana of the
American Legion, and Chef de Che
mln de Fer Fred Fraser of Washing
ton, D. C, and Correspondent Charles
Ardery of Indianapolis, of the 40 et 8
aociete. Horace brumley, official dele
. gate said. Among the state depart
ment commanders receiving a box of
the Rogue valley pears were the lead
ers of Mississippi, Georgia, Florida
and Tennessee, Bromley stated. Com
mander Ebel also presented the na
tional champion drum corps of Marl
boro, Mass.. with a box of the local
fruit and two boxes were given to
the secretarial and newspaper staff of
the national department.
Much favorable publicity resulted
from the local effort, Including an
announcement by the official loud
speaker at the Coliseum while the
Oregon section of the parade passed
before the reviewing stand, Bromley
related.
The unique Medford entry in the
parade, which featured two St. Ber
nard dogs garbed in true Alpine style
with conventional Red Croes and
casks of rum, scored a big hit with
the crowds, Bromley said. The dogs,
lent by Paul Bulkln, manager of the
Chateau, were a center of Interest
at the Oregon headquarters in the
Blltmore. hotel and everywhere they
appeared, even in Hollywood, accord
ing to the local Legionnaires present.
Medford post was one of only five
posts in Oregon having its official
post colors In the parade and will
receive a special award from the
national commander for this added
effort.
Those who attended the Los An
geles convention were generpua In
their praise of the entertainment
provided by the committees In charge.
Among the local Legionnaires pres
ent were Ebel, Bromley. Merle Kindle,
Walter Reinklng, Oscar Silver, E. C.
Ferguson. Earl Foy and Fred Luy.
Reports of the business accom
plished at the convention and other
details will be given at the regular
meeting of Medford post at the arm
ory tonight.
REVERSAL FILED

SALEM, Sept. 28. (&) The state
supreme court ruled Tuesday that the
Multnomah county probate court
does not have authority to probate
the estate of Marshall R. Armstrong,
who died a year ago in Walla Walla,
Wash.
The court, reversing the appoint
ment of William S. Nash of Port
land as administrator by Judge
George Tazwell, ruled that Deschutes
county had Jurisdiction because Arm
strong was a resident of that county.
The Deschutes county circuit court
had appointed Eulah C. Mulkey as
administrator.
Other opinions today Included:
In the matter of the estate of
Donald McLeod, deceased ; Mrs. W.
Mackenzie and others, appellants, vs.
Ina Graham and others, suit, in
volving disposition of estate. Appeal
from Mnlheur county. Opinion by
Justice Lusk. Judge Charles W. Ellis,

SYDNEY. Australia, Sept. 28. (AP)
Wool sales In Sydney will be re
sumed Wednesday, and continuing
through Friday, it was announced
today. Postponed Monday owing to
a disagreement between brokers and

1 teaspoon nutmeg
1-3 teaspoon salt
3 eggs
1 cup sweet milk
xk cup nuts
V2 cup raisins
3 Vi cups flour
1 teaspoon soda
1 teaspoon baking powder
Cream fat and sugar. Add rest of
ingredients and beat a minute. Half
fill paper cups. Set three Inches
apart on a shallow pan. Bake.

Oakland has asked the clerks' union
to extend until 5 p. m., Friday -trie

spokesmen' took the request under

The San Francisco retail grocery
clerks union.' on. ' behalf of 1,200
members, conferred with. the execut
ive committee of. the AFL central la
bor council Friday night.-The clerks
report they have reached an impasss
with the Retail Grocers association
over the union's demands for wages
on a level with those established In
recent agreement with the Indepen
dent Grocers Protective association.
Italian Cruiser Moves
SHANGHAI, Sept. 28. ) The
Italian cruiser Montecuccoll and the
destroyer Lepanto sailed suddenly
for an undisclosed destination to
day. The gunboat Carlotto .is the
only Italian-warship remaining here.

2 teaspoons soda
2 teaspoons baking powder
1 cup chopped nuts
1-3 cup chopped citron
1- 3 cup chopped candied pineapple
Bol sugar, fat, spices, salt, rais
ins, dates and water slowly for five
minutes. Stir frequently. Cool. Add
other Ingredients. Pour Into loaf pan
lined with buttered waxed paper.
Bake two and one-quarter hours In
slow oven. -
Nutty Date Loaf
9 cups granulated sugar
2- 3 cup cream
i teaspoon cream of tartar
1-3 cup water
1 teaspoon vanilla
Vi cup chopped dates
14 cup chopped nuts
Mix sugar with cream, cream of
tartar and water. Cook slowly and
do not stir. When a soft ball forms
In cold water, pour Into two soup
plates. Do not touch It for 10 min
utes. Beat one until it Is creamy.
Knead it five minutes. Add part
with other dish. Wrap In waxed
paper and store In a cold place.
Take off paper. Cover with melted
sweet chocolate. Slice.

Lets Farmers Make Own Rain

ANTIGO. Wis. (JP) If summer rains
fall to come a group of Langlade
county potato growers do not worry.
They simply set up their "portable
Irrigation systems and give the po
tato plants the needed moisture. ,
The newest development In irri
gation, these portable units are being
used by a number of north central
Wisconsin potato growers to provide
moisture at precisely the -right time,
and thereby virtually double yields.
They also serve as insurance against
crop failure in years of severe
drought. 1
The portable units' are made up
of . 16 or 20-foot sections of four or
slx-fnch diameter electrically welded
light weight steel pipe. Ralnheads,
or revolving sprayers, are built into
the pipe 40 to 60 feet apart. A spe
cial type of rubber washer in the
ends of the pipe permits flexibility
at the couplings but seal tightly
under pressure.
Most of the units In operation here
have sufficient pipe and ralnheads
to irrigate approximately four acres
at one time. Some have enough pipe
to lay lines on four acres while water
la being sprayed on an adjacent four
acres. By this method no time is lost
in moving pipe to new locations.
Practically all of the units are engi
neered to provide an inch of water
over an area In half an hour.
Lakes, streams and reservoirs, which
are virtually huge wells, are sources
of water for the potato growers. Small
automobile gasoline engines are used
