George Murphy share top honors
with Charlie, with Rita Johnson,

roles.
Marking the first time that the
famous Bergen-McCarthy team has
appeared In acting parts although
they had a specialty In a, previous
picture "Letter of Introduction"
proves thpt even a wooden dummy
can act when given the proper, en
couragement. In this case It's a
rival dummy. Mortimer Snerd.
Bergen who "manages" both Mc
Carthy and the new screen sensa
tion, put Mortimer into the picture
just to get even with Charlie, who
seems to have been getting a swelled
head recently.
Mortimer, a buck-toothed farmer
boy dummy, claims he Is from Iowa,
being the chief squirt on a dairy
farm before going into the movies.
He has red hair, blue eyes, buck
teeth and a shock of unruly hair.
His clothes are strictly mall-order
variety end look like they took a
long time in being delivered.
'. Charlie says he's "just a peasant,
an uncouth oaf." And there the
"matter stands.
The story of "Letter of Introduc
tion" presents Bergen as a strug
gling ventriloquist who, meeting
Menjou, Is started on his road to
success and fame. The Bergen-McCarthy
sequences include his ap
pearances in swanky New York night
clubs, his gradual rise to farme,
and his ultimate success on the air.

with June Travis, Robert Kent and
Man Mountain Dean, the bearded
behemoth of ring fame, heads the
double bill opening at the Rialto
Theater for today and tomorrow.
Departing from his customary
characterizations, the cavern
mouthed comedian, In his newest of
fering, portrays the role of a sclen-tlfflcally-created
superman.
Brown, returning to Webster Col
lege as a sophomore. Is beaten and
bludgeoned on the football field in
the spirit of good clean fun when
he attempts to impress Miss Travis,
the belle of the campus. That night

ing house where Brown resides se
lects Brown as the unwitting sub
ject of an experiment to Increase
the human normal strength many
fold. The experiment works.
From that point on the story of
"The Gladiator" la as amazing aa it
is amusing, picturing Brown as a
virtual one-man Olympic team and
a co-ed favorite from coast to coast.
Man Mountain Dean, the ponder
ous comic mainstay of the American
wrestling ring, and Brown come to
grips In the climactic wrestling
match, said to be one of the most
spectacular and hilarious sequences
ever captured by movie cameraa.

On Craterian Screen '
The first visual account of the
terrible hurricane disaster that struck
New England will be on the screen
of the Craterian theatre starting to
day. Showing how the force of the hur
ricane hit the east with the full
might of Its Intensity, these motion
pictures were rushed to Medford by
air mall and are among the first
films of the disaster to be shown In
the country.

FIRE HAZARD
FOREST REDUCED
Lightning storms Friday evening
brought mixed blessings to the Unit
ed States and state forest services.
The rain decreased fire hazards for
the time being but the lightning
cattsed several small fires.
The storm did no agricultural dam
age in the valley and in general the
rain was beneficial, County Agent
Robert G. Fowler said.
Fog reduced visibility in various
parts of the forest areas yesterday
and it was thought that when the
mist cleared other fires might be
found.
First hunter's fire of the year was
reported by the state forest service.
It covered about an acre and a half
In an Inaccessible part of the Rock
creek area. It was caused by a hunt
er's signal fire built to attract lost
members of the party, the district
warden's office reported yesterday.
The fire patrol found two stray pack
horses near the scene and took them
to a camp at Railroad gap, the war
den's office said. The lost hunters
were found, the office was informed.

Two lightning fires Friday evening
occurred in the Rogue river area but
were confined to the single '. trees
struck, the warden's office stated. All
state fires were out last night.
A small lightning blaze occurred
on the Applegate district of the
Rogue River national forest. A look
out reported a lightning fire on the
Umpqua divide near the Tiller-Trail
road but firefighters could not find
the blaze and it was assumed it had
been extinguished by rain.
The weather bureau stated .33 of
an inch of rain fell during the storm
from 5:35 p. m. to 8:15 p. m. Fore
cast was for fair today, increasing
cloudiness probably with showers
tomorrow.
Sllverton Leader Passes

Sam Ames, 83, died suddenly here
early today. With his brother Lewis
he started the Sllverton planing mill
many years ago and also started the
first water works here. In 1900 he
bought the hardware store that still
bears the family name.
