BRITISH PREMIER
CALLS UPON KING
Surprise Visit Linked to

Peace Terms Upheaval.
LONDON, Sept. 23. (P) Former
Premier Baldwin made a surprise call
on the king as Premier Neville Cham
berlain flew today to the German
Rhlneland to try to buy European
peace from Chancellor Hitler with
surrender of the Czechoslovak 8u
detenland. Earl Baldwin, who led the nation
through the crisis of Edward VIII's
abdication, lunched with Chamber
lain yesterday.
His visit to Buckingham palace
aroused quick political speculation,
for he la known to be extremely
friendly with Anthony Eden, who
served as foreign minister under both
Baldwin and Chamberlain.
Lord Baldwin stayed at the palace
about an hour.
Meanwhile, Earl Wlnterton. chan
cellor of the Duchy of Lancaster, a
cabinet member, appealed to the peo
ple to keep "a very cool head and
clear Judgment In the terrible per
plexities of the situation."
He spoke at Horsham, In the dis
trict, he represents In the house of
commons, .
"The crisis la by no means over
and false optimism at this moment
would be as dangerous as black pes
simism," he aaid.
"The prime minister Is taking with
him to Germany proposals which.
In the clroumstances France and
ourselves believe we can honestly
and honorably make and which the
Czechoslovak government have ac
cepted." Eden broke with the present pre
mier seven months ago rather than
support efforts to reach a peace .un
derstanding with the Italian premier.
Benito Mussolini, under what he con
sidered threats.
Eden deolared last night!
"They (the British people) know
that a stand must be made. They
pray that It be not made too late."
Chamberlain, facing violent criti
cism at home, was aald to have a
set of peace gestures to be asked from
Hitler In return for the Czechoslovak
Sudctenland.

SEA. DEFENSE SAYS
TOLEDO, Ore., Sept. 22. (P) The
first-degree murder trial of Henry
Nelson, Portland salesman, Indicted
on a charge of shooting Richard
Earle, Depoe bay pleasure boat op
erator July 18, got underway yester
day after a Jury of eight men and
four women had been selected.
District Attorney L. O. English, in
opening statement, told the Jury
Nelson's statement made Immediately
after his arrest was an admission of
premeditated murder. He said Nelson
confessed he had gone to his car,
procured his gun, returned and shot
Earle.
Defense Attorney George Mowrey,
Portland, told the Jury the original
story of the boat ride ,that preceded
the fatal affair was incorrect. He said
Nelson and his woman companion.
Lucille Coenenberg, Portland, had
gone to sea with Earle to be married
beyond the 12-mlle line.
Mowrey said that Earle had falsely
told them he was authorized to per
form the marriage ceremony at sea.
A mock service had been performed,
he asserted. Ho continued that Earle
and Nelson had drunk heavily on the
way back and after landing.
He aald the defense would prove the
victim took Nelson's gun and fired the
first shot and that the defendant
then wrested the gun from Earle and
fired In self-defense.
The Jury visited the scene of the
shooting late Wednesday.
