POLICIES IN TALK
AT DINNER MEET
A progressive policy beneficial to
the entire state wtll be carried out
by Henry Hess if he Is elected gov
ernor of Oregon, the Democratic
nominee told a dinner-meeting of
party leaders in the Hotel Medford
last night. About 40 were present
Mr. Hess' talk emphasized that he
had not become a liberal overnlgh
for political purposes, citing his state
legislative record to show that he
has always been progressive. He said
he has favored adequate old-age pen
sions, taxation relief, enforcement of
law and order with equality to all
and an equitable labor program. He
declared he was not tied to any
organized labor group but has worked
for the benefit of labor in general
for the social and economic benefit
of the entire state.
Referring to his Republican oppon
ent, Charles A. Sprague, Mr. Hess
said "he cannot climb into bed with
liberals at this 11th hour." adding
that the Salem publisher has always
been a conservative whose Interests
are closely linked with those of em
ployer groups.
Frank J. Tlerney of Portland,
chairman of the Democratic state
central committee emphasized the
necessity of an organized campaign
and the importance of party workers
conveying the attitude of all Demo
cratlc candidates to the voters so
that they will know precisely how
the nominees stand on all Issues.
The dinner-meeting was arranged
by Ward Spatz, chairman of the
county committee.
Mr. Hess and Mr. Tlerney left this
morning for Klamath Falls.
