WASHINGTON (UP) The U. S.
army air corps, at a coat of hundreds
ot millions of dollars, will be the
most modern and powerful military
striking force In the world by 1940,
aeoordlng to the consensus of for
eign military observers here.
By June 30, 1040. the army U
scheduled to have a total of 2.350
first line" fighting and bombing
planes. In addition there will be
more than 700 other planes of the
"second line" that could be advant
ageously pressed Into service In an
emergency.
One of the outstanding featurea
ot the "first line" division will be
Its Inclusion of at least 83 "flying
fortresses" of the tpe which re
cently made a record one stop mass
flight from Miami, Fla., to Bucnoa
Aires 5,260 miles In 27 hours and
50 minutes flying time.
These streamlined, all-motal mon
oplanes, with a gross weight of more
than 20 tons, a wing span of 105
feet and length of 70 feet, have
established themsolves aa one of the
most Important cogs In the Amerl
oan defense machine. Military ob
servers believe they are superior to
any bombing planes possessed by
foreign powers. They are powered by
four 1,000-horsepower Wright "Oy
elone" engines.
, Super-Ship Envisioned
The army Is experimenting with
a much more powerful bomber than
the "flying fortress." known as the
"super flying fortress," but has not
yet put It Into production. Experi
ment have shown that the latter
type said to be the most powerful
military plane ever constructed
needs some changes, but generally
has proved satisfactory and will be
produced In Increasing numbers next
year.
The war department recently plac
ed an order for 19 additional "fly
ing fortresses." of the B-17 type
Thirteen of these ships were deliv
ered to the army In 1037 and 2
more are In process of production,
with deliveries scheduled to begin
early In 1939. Delivery of the 15 ad
ditional fortresses Just ordered will
follow completion of the present
order of 25. The entire fleet Is ex
pected to be completed early In 1940.
However, In view of tholr out
standing performance on one Jltoht

President Roosevelt may ask the
next session of oongress for funds

Information obtained by Hughes on
that flight was made available to
the war and navy departments and
Is expected to prove highly valuable.
The aportsman-avlntor's "flying
laboratory" was equipped with navl
gating, direction-finding nnd other
instruments which had never before
been thoroughly tested. Also there
were certain mechanical featurea of
Hughes plane that were completely
new and may be incorporated In
military bombing plane designs.
At present the army is giving spe
cial attention to a new type plane
known as the "Alrcuda." which ts
propelled by two "pusher" engines.
The "Alrcuda," although heavily
armed with machine guns, la capable
of tremendous speed exceeding 300
miles an hour and Is aald to be
able to ovortflke any bombing plane
now built.
A plane similar to the "Alrcuda"
Is being thoroughly tested for stratos
phere flying. This ship has a aenled
cabin and, when perfected, probably
will have a speed of nearly 400 miles
an hour.

according to A. L. Haines,
professor of chemistry at the Uni
versity of South Dakota.
The non-explosive gas now used
to lift dirigibles also will keep orange
Juice freah for six months or a
sponge cake for two months, Haines
snld. .
The professor explained that the
gas "tends to decrease formation of
bacterial growth" or In other words
keeps food from got Mug mouldy.

months and retain Its original fresh

half a sponge cake was sealed In
an atmosphere of helium and was
allowed to remain for two months
while the other half was left In nor

was spoiled."
Hnlnes explained that because ot
some of its unusual qualities, helium
has a number of Important uses
such as filling valves for use In elec
tric telegraphy, filling electric light
bulbs, deep sea diving and the In
flation of balloons and dirigibles.

Justices Believed To Want
Member Well Versed In
Irrigation, Mineral Law
2 Westerners Hinted.

WASHINGTON This department
gathers that the supreme court would
like Mr. Roosevelt to appoint a mem
ber who knows western Irrigation and
mining law and that calls for a
western man.
And the western fnen most often
mentioned hereabouts for the Job
are William Denman of San Fran
cisco and Sam O. Bratton of Albu
querque, New Mexico, members re
spectively of the ninth and tenth
circuit courts.
Senator Norrls of Nebraska, who
himself could easily be called a
westerner, already has recommended
Felix Frankfurter, Harvard law pro
fessor. Lacking on the supreme court
bench Just now Is a specialist in
Irrigation and mining law as it is
known in the west. Besides natives
sons, potatoes and cowpunchers, the
west has contributed two complete
branches of basic law, thoso dealing
with water rights and metal mining.

when he was on the court but he
retired a year ago.
Water Not Everywhere
Just now a really serious test of
the whole basic law of irrigation
rights 1 arising in Nebraska, Wyom
ing and Colorado. The U. S. bureau
of reclamation has intervented in a
suit Involving allocation of wnters
of the North Platte river among the
three states. In its supporting brief
the government lays claim to cer
tain water which heretofore the
states have claimed as subject wholly
to tholr own Jurisdiction
While the west Is young, It never
theless has built up a law experience
in mining and Irrigation dating back
nearly 100 years. That is older than
most corporate law. Moreover, much
mining and Irrigation law is based
on local practices whose origin could
be as mysterious to a resident, of
a rain-watered state as the fourth
dimension.
At present Justice Butler la "farth
est west" member of the court, and
he Is from Minnesota. That may
sound "far west" to a Broadway
habitue but to the Rocky mountain
and Pacific coast,, states Minnesota
Is about as far east as Rhode Island.
There's No Hurry
Both Justices Bratton and Denman
were suggested for the high court
at the time of the Black and Reed
appointments. At one time Denman
was much credited with originating
the plan for enlarging the supreme
court.
Of late, however, friends have
Insisted that he proposed only that
part having to do with Increasing
membership on the district and cir
cuit courts. Whatever the truth or
purposo of the stories, the later ver
sion might conceivably reduce sen
ate opposition arising against any
one connected with the court-enlargement
Idea.

compulsion to hurry an appointment,
and may save It until after election
time.

Ham nnd Eggs
. 1 pound slice of ham
4 eijgs
teaspoon salt
teaspoon paprika
fe teaspoon celery salt
3 tablespoons boiling water
Select ham slice half an inch thick.
Heat a frying pan and when "smok
ing" add and quickly brown the
ham from which the rind has been
discarded. Cover with a lid and lower
heat. Cook for IS minutes or until
very brown and tender. Remove ham
to warm serving place and pour off
two tablespoons of fat. Break e;gs,
one at a time. In a saucer and slip
Into the hot ham fat left in the
frying pan. Sprinkle eggs with seas
onings. Add water and cover with
a lid. Cook slowly until a white film
forms over the top of the eggs. (For
those who Mke eggs "turned" care
fully turn them over). Arrange eggs
on top or around the ham on a
serving platter.
Apple Tiiplnra
cup granulated tapioca
4 teaspoon salt
2V'a cups bolllng.water
2-3 cup granulated sugar
1 cup diced cooked apples
I tablespoon butter
tablespoon lemon Juice
& teaspoon vanilla
Cook the tapioca, salt and water
together for 20 minutes In a double
boiler. Add sugar and tipples. CooY
for 15 minutes. Add the rest of the
ingredients. Cool and chill. To cook
the apples, add one-third of a cup
of water to one cup of sliced atiples.
Cover and cook for five minutes over
a moderate fire. This cooking softens
the apples so they will easily mix
with rest of Ingredients.
