the fishermen whose native coast
they had invaded, but they were
merely the necessary background
to the ladies they escorted and
those ladles were the very per
fumed essence of the Cote d'Azur
Like a gaudy flowerbei they sat
there, laughing, chattering, drink
ing blondes in bathing-isuits, in
bright-colored trousers, in gallv
patterned beach-rubes.

whiter stucco balustrade of the
terrace, and beyond that lay the
blue Mediterranean, crowned with
the shimmering, hazy vault of the

a tall glass: a slender, long-limbed
creature, dressed in white short
and shirt, with a crimson sash

suddenly, "a blonde over there
swarming with authors of all sorts,
shapes and sizes. Best sellers are
there, an ' not-so-gooa seuen, out

Apart from that, he was a hand
some devil, a confirmed bachelor
in his middle forties with a com
fortable private income apart from
hi prodigious sales, so that it was
no wonder he was a trifle cynical
where women were concerned.
He knew all the types and had
been pursued by most of them,
and, best of all, he knew the birds
of paradise of the Riviera, for he
had a villa outside Cannes where
he spent the halt of the year that
he wasn't exploring the queer
comers of the world in search of
adventure.
I looked at him now. at hla dark,
nawk-nosed face that might have
been a Spanish grandee's if It
hadn't been for the astonishing
blue of the eye, at hi square
jaw and massive shoulder, and
thought, with a little regret, that
the cynicism that had been at first
onlv a preventive cloak was now
becoming a part of him. Under hu
sleepy, good-natured manner there
lay, I well knew, a will as hard as
granite, and I had a shrewd bus

tion to consider only the comfort
and well-being of one person, and
