Chapter 29
Message From Lee
ICS twisting in crooked smile,
-'Ankrom whirled to find a gun
iammed against his stomach and
tatchford'a gloating face within
short inches of his own.
"Go ahead," the sheriff jeered.
"Grab onto your iron an' I'll get
it over quickl I can't see as it'll
matter much to you one way or
the other. If a blue whistler don't
mow you down, within the hour
you'll be stretchin' hemp!"
Ankrom prepared to give Ratch
ford's confidence a Jolt. "Too bad
you can't cu. it Ratchford." he
aaid. "But you're a little late get
tin' started. Claydell an' his men
re on their way to town right now
must be nearly here by this
time."
"So you've swung over to him,
have you?" Ratchford scowled.
"Well, let 'em come. I've got six
teen deputies In the street outside
with orders to shoot the minute
Claydell shows."
"Got your Mex killer outside,
too?"
Ratchford grunted an oath, but
no reply.
"Look." said Ankrom softly.
"what proof you got that I'm the
one who shot ureanr
"Miss Struthers seen you; she'll
(wear to it"
"What if she won't?"
"Don't matter. I've got her state
ment down on paper an' signed."
"You hear that?" Ankrom said
for the eirl's benefit "You're in
the same boat I am. He'll bump
you oft soon 4 he settles with me.
You've played your part: your use
is over.
The girl said nothing. Ratchford
snarled. "Shut your trap or I'll
shut it for youl"
Ankrom grinned. "What you
Waltin' for? Go ahead an' shoot."
"I'll rhoot when I get ready."
Ratchford growled. 'This thing
ain't over yet."
Ankrom regarded the sheriffs
beefy countenance with specula
tive eyes. What was the meaning
of those words? Ankrom was neat
ly trapped: what else had the
sheriff planned?
He tried putting himself In
Ratchford'a place; tried imagining
himself with Ratchford's personal
ambitions, lack of moral scruples
and ruthless drive for power.
The sheriff's first move at this
time would, he felt be the re
moval of Rafter T's foreman. He
wanted to smash Trone's power,
to usurp Trone's possessions. Al
ready he had gone a long way in
undermining the old man s nerve:
Trone had taken to whisky to
bolster his tailing courage.
What he wondered, would hurt
Trone mostr The answer came
with a blindint flash. The most ef
fective way of smashing Trone
would be through Lee it would
prove the crowning blow to the
old man's series of misfortunesl
He recalled that an attempt to
get at Trone through Lee had once
been made already. Only An
Icrom's own Interference that night
In Peso Pinto had caused the sher
iff's plans to miscarry. He remem
bered that glowing Iron with Its
Straddle Bug brand: he recalled
the burly figure slouching past
him on the street before that house
and he knew that Ratchford was
waiting for Lee now!
No Vain Boast
A NKROM stared at Ratchford's
heavy features with new un
derstanding and realized that
nothing save death would ever
atop him from carrying out his
plans.
"Damn you. Ratchford! You
tan't cut this thing!"
"Can't cut what?"
"What you've got In mind for
Lee."
"So you've guessed It's her we're
waitin for, eh? Well, you're right
about that: it Is. She ought to be
here now. I had things set for
eleven o'clock."
"You locoed fool," Ankrom snat
the words contemptuously. "The
hand of every honest man In this
country will bi raised against vou
If ynu harm that Rirl!"
"You're wrong about that"
Ratchford assured him with a
lazy grin. "Not a one will dare say
boo! I've got this range eatin' out
of my trousers pocket mister.
Folks around here'U do what I tell
'em an' like It."
He looked at Ankrom amusedly
"Besides." he added. "I'm not flfl-
urin' to harm Lee Trone I've got
better sense than that I'm gonna
get the same results by mnrrvln'
her"
Ankrom lauched. and the sound
brought a scowl to Ratchford's
fare.
"What's so funny?"

Ratchford would be fully capable
of carrying out his threat

rom. Once Ratchford married the
girt there was nothing to stop him
from putting Ankrom out of the
way: there was always the Lev

A devil's temper was stirring In
Ankrom; a savage desire to ijet
his hands on Ratchford and bruise
and batter. r desire born of des
peration. But somehow he kept his head;
held the turbulent fury under
control. "Very slick, Ratchford;
plenty slick," he drawled. "But
you're forgetting one factor a
weighty one that's goln' to break
your string."
"What am I forgettin'?" Ratch
ford growled.
"You're leavln' Claydell out of
your calculations."
"You're the one that's forget
tin'," Ratchtord grinned. "That
fiosse out in the street's got orders
o shoot Claydell on sight."
"How're you figurin' to get
away with that?' asked Ankrom,
playing for time.
A deep chuckle of Joy left the
sheriff's mouth. "Claydell,'.' he
said, "is the gent that's out to
smash the Rafter T. An' I got the
proof at last I've found out what
lie's after!"
Plots And Counterplots
ANKROM'S mind spun round In
a dizzy whirl; these plots and
counterplots were enough to un
seat a man. Was it possible that
both Ratchford and the boss of
Swinging J were out to break the
Rafter T? That both were work
ing toward common goal but
driven on by different motives?
Ho knew that DJban and this
girl in the cell behind him had
been accomplices of Ratchford.
That much lad pretty well been
proved. Of Hackett and Heflle and
Bandera he was not so certain.
True, the girl had said that Hack
ett was a tool of the sheriff's in
charge of rustling operations put
In motion to drain the Rafter T's
resources. And Claydell had im
plied that Heme was a tool of
Ratchford's. But he had seen that
Betty had a habit of weaving fic
tion with her facts, and if Clay
dell was in this too he would natu
rally swing all blame toward
Ratchford.
It might well be that Claydell
and the sheriff were pitted against
each other both determined to
gain possession of the Rafter If
this were so, and it now seemed
possibla that It was, Bandera and
Heflle and Hackett might hsve
been leagued with the boss of
Swinging J. And Bandera was
still very much alive and no mean
factor in a fight even if he had
backed down this morning!
With a raucous squeal of brakes
a car was stopped before the
sheriff's oftice. Booted feet came
pounding toward them. Ankrom
looked at Ratchford; the sheriff
was watching him with head
cocked to one side in a listening
attitude, his eyes opaque and hard.
A man came round the angle of
the steel-barred aisle. It was one
of the Rafter punchers. Windy.
But for a moment he stood In pant
ing silence. He looked from the
sheriffs leveled gun to Ankrom
wonderingly. Ankrom noted that
the puncher was unarmed.
A malicious pleasure surged
through Ankrom's veins as Windy
said to Ratchford: "Mir Lee said
to tell you as how the ol' man got
hurt this evenin' an' that she won't
be able to meet vou In town to
nitrht as requested."
Ankrom lauched at the sheriffs
scwl "Tough luck. Ratchford."
he chuckled. "Puis me some in
mind of that ol' saw about the best
laid plans of mice n' men."
The sheriff swore. "What the
hell happened to him?" he de
manded. "How'd he get himself
hurt?"
Windy shifted his feet His an
swer seemed apologetic. "Ho got
throwed from his bronc."
"Throwed?"
Windy gulped. "He was drunk,
you see."
Through much experience In
diagnosing the various symptoms
of trouble, Ankrom realized that
Windy was keeping something
bark. This thing must be more
serious than was Indicated bv the
puncher's words. Evidently there
was something
Ratchford's rough voice cut
through his thoughts:
"Drunk! Well, it wouldn't be the
first time '.ie's been In that condi
tion! How bad hurt Is he?"
"He's dead!" the puncher blurted.
"He broke his neck."
