Manager of Bagley Cannery
Says Industry Now First
in Volume Among All
Fruit, Vegetable Packs
Canned tomatoes and tomato pro
ducts rank first In volume among ail
the fruit and vegetable packa of tne
United States, Ralph E. Koozer, man
ager of the Bagley Canning company
of Ashland, told the regular weekly
luncheon-meeting of the Klwanl6
club in the Hotol Medford Mop.aay
noon.
Mr. Koizer, tracing the history and
development of the tomato canning
Industry, stated that, in the 80 yenis
since tomatoes were first canned tn
the west, the Industry has developed
to tho point where the annual output
Is valued at t30.000.000, or mors than
40 per cent of the value of the west's
entire vegetablo pack. He also said
that over 13,000.000 cases. In tin, ivere
packed In the west last year and that
almost 100 per cent of the entire
American pack of tomato paste and
sauce was done In the west.
Maryland First
California, Mr. Koozer stated, pro
duced 85 per cont of the western to.
mato pack and ranked second 3nly
to Maryland as the largest tomato-
canning pack In the United States.
Utah la second, Colorado third and
Oregon fourth, among western states,
he said.
"In the tomato canning Industry
there la no such thing as an average
year," Mr. Kooeor told the moetln?
"The crop throughout the countrv
fluctuatea widely, demand varies and
the national pack. In consequence,
has run as high as over 43 million
cases last year, to aa low aa 33 million
cases In 1039. These figures Include
all tomato products,"
Divided up last year, the national
pack, he explained, was as follow!,.
Canned tomatoes. 31,367.423 cases.
tomato Juice, 13.444,973 cases, leaving
some five million oases of tomato
products such aa catsup, paste and
sauce.
400,000 Acres Required
'Normally a little ovor " 400,000
sores aro required to satisfy the needs
of the tomato canning Industry In
tne united states," he said, "about
one-fourth of these being located
In the west."
Mr. Koozer traced the development
or tne tomato canning industry from
me eariy i ioo s until now. He atatnd
the first recorded pack of tomatoes
In the west was put up by Francis
uutting, wno had established n pre-
serving factory in San Fnncisco In
ISS7. The first cannery In the Rogue
River valley was established In Ash
land In 1002 by Charles Pierce, he
stated.
The speaker explained that It wnn
still too early to predict the rln of
tnis year's local crop, or the price to
oe paid growers, but said he believed
the crop would be slightly smaller
tnau last year.
Harold Brown, president of the
elub, presided at the meeting.
