off the Oregon coast for the first

The Paladlnt Pish company, one of
two buyers, cut Its price to four
cents. The Columbia River Salmon
company did not cut Its price, but
ceased buying fish several days sgo
due to the Inability of California
canneries to" handle the big Influx
of tuna.

the benefit of private Interests, the
salmon Industry faces extinction, the
Paclfto coast's 9300,000,000 a year
tourist Industry la endangered and
wild life Is being recklessly destroy

Fear Salmon End.
Construction of more ' Columbia
river dams would "change the whole
biological character of the river and
put an end to the valuable salmon
runs." Finley asserted. lie demanded
aa only fair comparison of the valun
of the salmon run, "the basis of an
industry suppotrlng thousands of
families, and barges.
Finley told the port authorities
rivers were valuable In earlier days
for commerce when they provided the
only competition with railroads. To
day, he said, rail lines and highways
girded the nation, trucks providing
enough competition to keep rates
down.
No Longer Cheapest.

Comparing land promoters of the
early west with present waterway de
velopments, Finley charged that "wo

acres, now reduced to 1000.
