HOFFARD ELECTED
CRATER MANAGER
TO FINISHSEASON
Popular Veteran Confident
Locals Will Win Second
Half Championship
Practice Sessions Called.
Paul "Hoosler" Hoffard, the most
popular baseball player to perform
on a local diamond In the past 10
years, was last night unanimously
chosen by members of the Medford
Craters to lead them In the two re
maining games of the second-half
Southern Oregon league pennant
race. The meeting waa held In the
offices of Austin Frailer, president
of the Medford Athletlo association,
and waa called to name a successor
to Wally Rlckert, who resigned his
managerial Job following the 18 to 10
Crater victory at Yreka Sunday.
There wasn't any doubt In the
minds of Crater players last night
regarding the man they wanted to
manage the team (or the balance of
the year. Frailer, conducting the
meeting, explained Its purpose and
ashed them who they wanted. To a
man, they answered, "Pop'll take us
In."
New Chief Confident
The big. left-handed hitting out
fielder, In accepting the managership,
came out flatly with the statement
that Medford should win the second
half championship. The first thing
he did was call practice sessions for
this afternoon, Wednesday and Fri
day at the high school park at 8:30.
With the resignation of Rlckert
from the mansgershlp and from the
team to devote all bis time to busi
ness, a change In the Crater Infield
will be necessary. The new manager
said that Orval Hampel, third base
man, would probably be shifted to
first base, taking the place of Bob
Smith, who won't see action again
this season because of a growth on
his ankle that needs rest before foot
ball season. Smith, however, will re
main In the role of coach. Either
Billy Calvert or Chief McLean will
hold down second base, depending
upon who pitches, and either of
those two will catoh, also depending
upon the hurlor. Dick Lewis will re
main on short snd Dick Sakralda,
Hoffard and Tommy White In the
outfield.
Cook On Third
Blney Cook, ex-Llnfleld college star
ond new Phoenix high athletlo coach,
will hold down third bass next Sun
day her against Olendale. Cook, a
right-handed batter, waa placed on
me local roster August 10, so will be
eligible to play Sunday. Billy Plche,
outfielder and Ray Erlckson, pitcher.
have been recalled from the Junior
uaicrs and will be In uniform Sun
day. Following next Sunday's gams, ths
second-half race will end with Cres
cent City playing here August 38.

In a tesm grappling match at ths

out not from excitement. Sat. Bob
Kenaston and Pets Belcastro col
laborated to wallop Sockeye Jack
McDonald and the Palooka, four
falls to two. It was ths first defeat
suffered by Sockeye and Joe sine
the beys began tearing eacb other

twice last night, SmollnskI was
left all alone In the ring with
Belcastro and Kenaston. Th first
time, he managed to revive enough
after Pete and Bob got through with
him to continue wrestling. The sec
ond time, he was carried to th
dressing room by McDonald and th
match was over.
It waa feared by many friends at
Kenaston that Belcastro wouldn't co
operate, but their (ears were ground
less. The Mad Italian proved s
whale of a partner for the Qol
Hlller. In fact, the only non-cooperation
taking place was thst glvsa
by SmollnskI to McDonald. Both
times Sockeye wss pinned It was
because the Polish Palooka couldn't
rally hla nerve enough to assist his
partner.
McDonald and SmollnskI grabbed
the first two falls by eliminating;
Belcastro, then making short work
of Kenaston. Sockeye grabbed Pete,
heaved him against ths ropes and
socked him In the stomach on th
rebound. Three of those body clouts
did for the Italian, and Kenaston
went out vis, the some system, with
SmollnskI finishing the Job after Mo-
Donald had weakened the Marina.
Pet and Bob evened the score at
two to two shortly after the Inter
mission. : Pet blasted a dropklck to
Smollnskl's whiskers, sending him In
to the ringside customers, and while
th Palooka stood outside th ropes
and watched with horror, Belcastro
and kenaston attempted to beat Mo-
Donald to death. They practically
did. With . McDonald ginned, th
pair started after SmollnskI. They
played with him like a cat doea si
mouse, rubbing their hsnds in un
holy Joy and gloating nastily. Bel
castro grabbed Joe with a full Nelson
and Kenaston hammered on his un
protected front. Then. Pet and Bob
exchanged placea and SmollnskI was
further punished. Finally, with Ken
aston holding .SmollnskI helpless,
Belcastro backed across the ring and
moved forward with a roar, ending
with a double-barrelled dropklck that
landed flush In the pit of Joe's
shomach. That ended Joe for th
tlm being.
Coming back for the next two falls,
the armory was nearly torn apart as
the four grapplera went crazy. Twice,
police almost called a halt to pro
ceedings aa singly. In pairs, In threes
and In fours the muscls-manglsrs
carried their warfare outside th ring
snd Into th ringside seats. Smolln
skI spent most of his tlm picking
himself off patrons' lsps, and th
other three gained more than a
speaking acquaintance with several
ladles and gentlemen seated In six-bit
chairs.
At last Kenaston got McDonstd la
a Qold IIII1 crab and, of course, thai
was flnls for Sockeye. It was ob
tained while SmollnskI was wander
ing around outside the ropes pleading
with Belcastro not to hit him so
hard. Wlt)l Sockeye out, they should
have called the thing off, but Pet
and Kenaston had to have their tun
with SmollnskI, which they did.
They stalked him around th ring
tor fully 10 minutes, letting him suf
fer with apprehension. Then, they
picked him up In the old battering
ram hold and cracked hla head
against ths corner of the ring rope.
They did It again and SmollnskI
folded up like an accordion. They
wanted to give it to him one mon,
but McDonald leaped In th ring and
stopped th goings on. SmollnskI was
limp ss a dlshrag and McDonald car
ried him to the showers.
In the opening match, Bobby Ohtck
gave Benny Wilson sn upside-down
lariat spin the fourth round of a
olean sqd sparkling nout for th Ion
(all. Wilson was unanl to com back.
