outing and picnic at Bybee bridge

Miss Morgan, sister of Mrs. Falwell,
will be remembered by her many

Rubbish Fire A private garage was
threatened last night by a rubbish
fire at 41S Union street. The burn
ing pile of rubbish was raked awav
from the garage and put out by the
fire department's chemical crew
which answered the call at 8:45.
Cause of the fire was unknown, the
family occupying the premises not
being home.
Return Home Dr. and Mrs. F. J.
Moffatt returned on this morning's
train from Portland. Mrs. Moffatt
had been confined In the Good Sa
maritan hospital In Portland for the
past three weeks due to a nervous
breakdown. Dr. Moffatt went to
Portland several days ago to bring
her home. Mrs. Moffatt will conval
esce at her home on the Old Stage
road for some time before returning
to Dr. Moffatt's office In the Medford
Center building.

service at Spokane, Wash., who was
en route from Spokane to San Fran
cisco In his Beech craft plane; and

this morning to the Siskiyou national
forest to wind up his accounts as
time-keeper on two major fire He
was lent to the 8isklyou forest at
the outbreak of the Chetco and Nome
fires. He spent yesterday with hie
family here and expected to resume
his normal duties at Medford forest
headquarters tomorrow.
Minor Accident! Reports of five
minor automobile mishaps occurring
over the week-end were on file In
city police station this morning.
Allen C. Orton of Harbor and Manes
seh C. Weber of Trail drove cars In
volved In a minor accident four miles
north of Ashland on the Paeiflolilgh
way yesterday afternoon. Helen Sny
der of route 1. L. J. Rltehlnger of
Ashland and Richard 81mmons of
Talent drove vehicles Involved m a
slight mishap on the Pacific high
way five miles south of Talent last
night, the accident occurring when
the Rltehlnger car stopped suddenly
to avoid hitting a trailer on the
Simmons car. and the Snyder ma
chine struck the rear end of the
Rltshlnger auto, the report stated.
Philip Reed Morgan of California and
Earl H. Jamea of Central Point drove
cam colliding with minor damage on
the Pacific nUrhway two miles south
of Medford yesterday afternoon. At
Central avenue and Eighth street
Saturday morning, cars driven by
John W. Clark of route 3 and Mr.
Luella Allerton of California collided
with slight damage. W. B. Ro of
Gold Hill and Wilfred Newhall of
Bridge. Idaho, operated rehlclcj in
volved in a minor collision near Gold
Hill Saturday afternoon.

man. Grass Fire The fire department's
chemical crew was called at 1 :50 this
afternoon to put out a grass fire
near the Valley school on the east
side of town. The blase was spread
ing toward residences when the fire
men arrived. Someone burning trash
permitted flaming papers to blow
away and set fire to the grass, Chief
Roy Elliott said.
Planes Refueled Among today's
arrivals at Medford municipal air
port were three pilots who atopped
to have their planes refxieled. They
were Lieut. B. Hubbard, en route
from Fort Lewis, Wash., to March
field. Riverside. Cal., In an army
Douglas transport; Lieut. J. P. Stew
art, Fort Lewis to Oakland. Cal., in
an army Douglas basic trainer, and
Roy Shreck. returning to Spokane.
Wash., via Portland from San Fran
cisco in his Beechcraft. '
From Texas Mr. and Mrs. George
Van Fleet and sons. Raymond and
Richard, of Austin, Tex., are visiting
at the home of Mrs. Van -Fleet's
parents, Mr. and Mrs. F. 8. Brandon
of 311 North Ivy street. On their
way here, the Van Fleets spent a
week at Bozeman. Mont., visiting
Mr. Van Fleet's parents. They also
spent a day at Yellowstone national
park. While here, they plan to see
Crater lake. They will return homr.
by way of Crescent City, San ran
ctsco, Yosemlte national park and
points of Interest In the southwest.
Mr. Van Fleet Is Insurance actuary
for the state of Texas and la sta
tioned at Austin. He Is on a month's
vacation.
Damaged Plane leaves MeJ. H. H
Carr and Lieut. John T. Cox left
Medford municipal airport this morn
ing in the army Douglas bomber that
was damaged In a forced landing In
a wheat field near Roseburg recently.
The plane was to be flown to Hock
well field, San Diego. Cal., for per
manent repairs, The fuselage was
damaged when the plane was brought
down with its landing gear up, the
field being too small to use the
landing wheels. Temporary repairs
were made after a new engine had
been Installed, the work being super
vised by Major Carr. The sides of
empty oil cans were used In patching
the fuselage. The plane was flown
to Medford Saturday by Major Carr
and Lieutenant Cox.
Wallace Berry Has
Lead Dramatic Hit
Now At Craterian
A motion picture program that is
winning capacity crowds to the Cra
terian theatre Is the show that open
ed Its three day run yesterday, with
Wallace Beery starring In "Port of
Seven Seas" as the feature attraction,
and the new March of Time present
ing "G-Men of the Sea" as a special
added attraction on same program.
"Port of Seven Seas" Is different
from start to finish. It has comedy,
drama and adventure ell plyaed to
perfection by a brilliant cast headed
by Beery.
Outstanding In their roles aro
Frank Morgan, Maureen O'Sulllvan,
John Beal and Jessie Ralph. Especial
ly appealing are the proposal scenes
between Miss O'Sulllvan and Morgan
and the card game sequences with
Beery and Morgan.
The unique story concerns the
loves and sorrows of these simple
French folk. A boy leaves his sweet
heart to go to sea and breaks hla
father's heart by doing so. He Is -o
return In three years and marry the
girl, of his choice. But the girl con
cludes he Is gone forever so she ac
cepts the marriage proposal of a
man twice her age. She doesn't love
him but realizes she can make him
happy. -
The boy returns and demands hla
bride, but his father makes him see
that he must not break up other's
happiness and should return to the
sea for his own.
Interest Grows In
Contest For Local
"Shirley Temples"
Numerous phone call to the Med
ford Mall Tribune and the Craterlan
theatre ehow a marked Interest In
the contest to discover the little
southern Oregon girl who most close

entries have already been received.
A little confusion nss resuiiea. in

of their little girls that were taken
several years ago. Although It must
be sdmltted that many of these
would have a fine chance of winning
one of the three prizes, the contest
Is. nonetheless, open only to photo
graphs of fairly recent origin. And
all photos entered must bear the
name, address and present age of the
contestant. The little girt contestants
must also be residents of southern
Oregon.
The little girl who Is Judged winner
will receive 110 00 In cash: second
prlM will be 17.50 and third prtae
15.00. In addition, all three winners
will receive a personally autographed

All entrlea are to be made to the
"Shirley Temple Contest" at either
the Medford Mall Tribune or Crater
Ian theatre.
The contest closes Saturdsy night,
the closing night of the new Shirley
Temple picture, "Little Miss Broad

APOLLO IS WINNER
Sebastian A poll a won the Re inn art
and Barker Pvilm Beach' golf tourna
ment at the Rogue Valley Golf club
yesterday by shooting a 61-63 for a
total of 124 net in the 36-holo meaal
affair. For his victory, Apollo was
a worded a Palm Beach suit by Rein
hart and Barker.
George Harrington put together
rounds of 71 and 73 for a gross 144
to win the pair of Palm Beach slacks
offered to the low gross scorer. The
tourney was one of the most Interest
ing held this season, with 120 golf
ers competing.
George Jail turned in the lowest
net score of the year Saturday, when
he fired a 58. He traveled the 18 holes
In 82 strokes with a 24 handicap.
