Hints for Housewives
Note to Tom Sawyer: Surfaces to
be whitewashed should first be well
cleaned and freed of any particles
that might scale off. Scrub with a
Htiff brush or broom. Whitewash
adheres to moist surfaces better than
it does to dry ones. So spongo off
the area to be whitewashed with cold
water.
Let the dirt around a potted plant
come within half an Inch of the top
of the pot. Then fill the pot with
water every day for the average house
plant. If you have unusual plants,
ask your florist about the amount of
water they need.
Want something especially tasty for
plcnlca around the camp fire? Broil
or brown thin slices of ham. Dip
each slice In a shallow dish of chill
iauce mixed with seasonings and
place It Inside a split roll. Be sure
there are plenty of pickles handy.
To facilitate the retnoxal of frozen
foods from refrigerator trays, line
each tray with waxed paper before
filling It. When the food Is frozen,
lift It out by the edges of the paper
The paper may be torn off easily.

Classroom Tips
For Girls Going
To Colleges
By Betty Clarke
AP Feature Service Writer
So you're going to college?
Watch your classroom chic.
Don't let It be Just by accident
that you look your best for that
eight o'clock. Make Kt a pjint to give
yourself a precious few extra min
utes for:
Putting your moke-up on correct
ly. Get the powder on smoothly, all
over your face and well down tinder
your chin. No rogue, unless you're
extremely pale and think you need a
faint blush. Lipstick that's becoming,
but no hardening. (The danger lies
in getting It too dark.)
Brush and Cam It
Fixing your hair In Its most be
coming and easy to keep fashion
Half a dozen licks with & essib won't
do this year. You'll l?ave to brush
ond comb carefully to bring out the
life In your hair. Wear a nat or one
of the new bandanas tied peasant
fashion under your chin for protec
tion against wind damage.
Then check in your mirror to see
that both stocking seams are straight,
your slip isn't showing and sweater
and skirt ore together. Men are
cranky on those points.
Don't forget to maite necessary T,e
palrs on your manicure. Take that
heather-tone polish all off or put a
smooth, even coat on. If you've a
broken nail, cut It off and file it
down. Then you won't start biting it
when the prof gets a little stuffy.
And It won't catch In your hose when
you give; It an ln-betwocn tug dur
ing lunch.
walk Don't Run
When you are sure you look your
best, walk don't run to the class
room door. Then you won't have to
catch your breath when you talk to
that handsome quarterback who
ccmea down his fraternity house steps
ns you pass by.
Once you're settled In the class
room, watch your posture: sit com
fortably, but don't slouch. Don't
wind your legs around the chair
either. That's high school stuff.
