tickets to the final productions from
theatergoers who have not yet been
able to attend any of the plays.
The Taming of the Shrew, one of
Shakespeare's most sparkling come
dies, will be given tonight and to

Hamlet, one of the outstanding trag
edies of all time.
It was expected that the dosing
play would be seen by one of the
largest .audiences of this year's series.
Added to the repertoire for the first
time this year, Hamlet has proved
one of the most popular playa ever
given In the annual festivals and
although It has already been staged
twice this season Interest has not
waned and the advance ticket sale
for tomorrow night Indicates a near
oapaclty house.
Tickets For "Indents
The management emphasized today
that tickets for both tonight and to
morrow night are available at special
low prices for high school and col
lege students. It was pointed out that
while the festival is concerned pri
marily with entertainment. Shakes
pearean plnys are of educational val
ue to students.
The largest audience of the series
to date saw last night's repeat per
formance of the Merchant of Venice.
The same professional touch that has
characterized all the plays was again
In evidence.
Playing Shylock, Angus L. Bowmer, I
festival director, gave the role a con
vincing Interpretation, arousing scorn
for the scheming money-lender, yet
creating withal an undertone of
sympathy for the persecuted race the
character symbolized. Old as the
play Is, the current treatment of
Jews in Oermany and Italy gives it
a timely Interest and - emphasizes
anew the Immortality of Shakes
peare's dramas.
Dramatic Portia
The tense trial scene brought I
hush over the audience as Orace For
syth, playing Portia, rose to dramatic
heights as she pleaded for mercy for
the condemned An ton to and, falling
In that, ordered Shylock to take his
pound of flesh but not to shed a
drop of blood. The range of Miss For
syth's talents was displayed again
when, after the dramatic trial scene,
she turned to light comedy In ban
tering with Bassanlo, her husband,
who had not recognised her In man's
attire. Miss Forsyth has been one of
the most talented players ever en
gaged for the festival productions.
In the role of Bassanlo, Angus
Moore was a romantic suitor and
sympathetic friend of Antonio. Ha-
gan Moore made a satisfactory If a
trifle stiff Antonio.
Doreen Leverette brought loveli
ness and understanding as well as a
pleasant touch of light comedy to
the role of Nerlssa, maid-In-waiting
to Portia. She made a good team
mate for Miss Forsyth, particularly In
the plays lighter moments. Ann Ros
waa appealing as Jessica, Shy lock's
daughter.
Comedians Score
Robert Stedmsn again filled an Im
portant role with complete satisfac
tion, bringing to the character of
Q rattan o the proper devil-may-care
attitude. Gordon Davis, one of the
most promising of the young actors,
was a faithful Salarlno, friend of An
tonio and Basslano. William Cottrell
and James Baughman again display
ed their rare talent as comedians,
getting all the fun there was from
the roles of Launcclot, the clown,
and Oobbo, his father.
The Taming of the Shrew will be
given at 0:30 tonight with the fol

Contrary to rumors of an extended
season, the festival will end defi
nitely tomorrow night, the manage
ment announced.

A patent was sought today by a
Lake Oswego Inventor. Charles Mor
ris, on his "Corrlgan oars." The pad
dles are pulled In the orthodox way.
but the boat Is propelled forward In
stead of backward.
' Most schools of the county plan
to open fall terms, September 6
(Labor Day), and September 8, ac
cording to the county school super
intendent's office.
The Central Point school, according
to dates on teacher contracts re
ceived by the superintendent's office,
will open Monday. September 13.
This Is the latest opening date re
ported. School districts throughout the
county are now cleaning, up the
achoolhouses and making minor im
provements, in preparation for the
opening. The state police have also
started testing school busses for me
chanical defects.

United Air Lines effective August
15 were announced today by Max
C. Henne, manager.
Beginning next Monday trip 6
southbound will arrive at Medford
municipal airport at 13:01 a.m., and
depart at 13:11 a.m. Malls will close
at Medford central postofflce at
11:39 p.m. The plana now arrives at
midnight and leaves at 13:10.
Trip 1 northbound will arrive at
5:18 a.m., and depart at 5:38 a.m.
Malls will clow at 4:43 a.m. The
plane now arrives at 4:56 a. m., and
leaves at 5:04.
Trip 1 northbound will arrive at
13:40 p.m. and depart at 13:50 p.m.
Malls will close at 13:05 p.m. The
plane now arrives st 1:11 p.m., and
leaves at 1:31 p.m.
