President's Son Answers
Saturday Evening. Post
In Biting Interview With
Collier's Representative
NEW YORK. Aug. H. AP)
"Jimmy" Eoowvelt threw the long
W discussed matter ot Mb Income before
the American publlo today and de
clared in incisive terms it was much
mailer than a lot of people thought..
In a biting Interview with Associate
Editor Walter Davenport published in
Collier's magazine, the president's
son and secretary flatly denied Writer
Alva Johnston's intimation In a re
cent Saturday Evening Post article he
made from (250,000 to S2.000.000 a
year In the insurance business and
need political pressure on prospective
ellents.
Income Revealed
Young Roosevelt produced Income
' tax records showing that from 1933
to 1937, inclusive, his income ranged
from (21.714 to 149,187 annually,
totaling (173,978 for the five years.
"Since I have been my father's
" secretary, since I have been in Wash
ington," he said In the interview, "I
have not solicited nor attempted to
solicit no, and I haven't accepted
a single dollar of Insurance from any
one, any time, anywhere. Anything
to the contrary is a miserable He."
When be went to Washington last
4 year at a salary of 810.000, he said,
be resigned from the Boston Insur
ance firm of Roosevelt and Sargent
but continued to receive dividends on
business he had helped place.
Not All Easy Sailing
During his Insurance selling days,
he acknowledged, "I got Into places
1 never would have If I wasn't the
son of the president. But, son or no
son, I got tossed out of a lot, too."
He named several large corpora
tions whose insurance business he
had failed to get because he was
underbid, Including Paramount Pic
tures, Stone and Webster, and the
Ford Motor company.
"Certainly father gave me no direct
in,' Be continued. "1 had never
asked him to speak for me. And
anybody who ssys or suggests that he
would have aided me In anv oum-
tlonable way Is. of course, a liar a
rather cowardly liar whom I'd like
personally but briefly to meet." (A
new york newspaper published a
composite picture today of him and
Johnson, author of the Saturday Eve
ning Post article; In boilng clothes
squaring off.)
The appearance of the Interview
l was preluded by a National Radio
J (NBC) Interview with Davenport
from Eastport, Me., last nizht. in
which Roosevelt went over much of
wie material covered in the article.
Johnson In Rebuttal
Johnston Issued a statement In re
buttal which said In part:
"The statement of James Rnnxv.it

Wall St. Report
NEW YORK. Aug. 13. (AP) The
stock market suffered an attack of
war "nerves" today but late buying
stimulants were administered and
early losses running to more than
3 points were reduced.
As In the preceding session, bro
kers said, traders ran to cover on
the fear of a military outbreak at
the Czechoslovak border over the
week-end. Tangible basis for this
uneasiness, however, apparently was
lacking.
The pace slowed after noon and
tbe volume was comparatively small
on the belated recovery ahlft. Trans
fers were around 1.600,000 shares.
