Forced to Pay Jail Board
While Awaiting Spy Trial

had been held as a suspected spy
and subjected to trial.
He was not so much annoyed by
the confinement part of which was
solitary as he was by the fact the
Germans Insisted that he pay "board
and room" while In jail.
"They made me pay for my food
and lodging and for my transporta
tion when they took me across Ger
many to stand trial," Rlehl ex
plained. When he was finally released, Rlehl
said, the police "didn't bother to
apologize" for their error nor would
they refund bis money.
"They told me," he said, "that I
had an opportunity to see the coun
try and that I should be satisfied
with that."
For the benefit of others planning
to visit Nazlland, Rlehl suggested:
"If I were ever to return to Ger
many, and I do not Intend to do
so, I would take care to stick to
the straight and narrow tourist
trails. There's no place there for a
visitor who wants to deviate from
the regular routine."
It was "deviating from the rr fil
ler routine" that caused Rlehl his
trouble.
After graduating from the Univer
sity of Oregon, where be worked his
way through school as a professional
wrestler, RlehV entered the Massa
chusetts Institute of Technology on
a scholarship.
His work there won him a fellow
ship which took him to Europe.
Early In 1837, while visiting Lubeck.
Oermany, Rlehl became acquainted
with two German youths and on
one occasion made a bicycle trip
with them to a popular beach re
sort. '
Rlehl said his acquaintance with
the young men was casual, -as he
did not speak -German well. 'He left
Lubeck shortly afterward and trav
eled extensively on the continent,
returning to Germany nine months
later.
He was arrested at Stuttgart, sev
eral hundred miles from Lubeck,
while wetting In front of a tailor
shop to obtain his clothes before
leaving for "home.

after refusing to accept his passport
or to permit htm to contact the
American counsel; At his trial held
In Lubeck, It developed he was sus
pected of attempting to obtain mili
tary information from his two bicycl
ing companions, who had been em
ployed In an airplane factory.
Rlehl said one of them went to
prison for nine months snd the
other for six months for associating
with the American. Rlehl still classi
fies himself as a "tourist" but hopee
to settle down to a Job as an archi
tect preferably with the govern
ment's housing administration In
Washington. If he does not obtain
a Job he will return to Portland.

ever, about 100 pickers completed

bargee whose body was recovered from
a canal near Warwick was driven to
suicide by bad corns on his feet was
expressed by the local coroner at the
Inquest. "If he had to do a lot of
walking, he might very well have
thought the game was not worth the
candle." the coroner said.

WASHINGTON, Aug. 13. P) Sec
retary Wallace urged farmers today to
defend "your farm programs" against
"enemies" who, he said, srught to
destroy agriculture by advancing
prlce-flxlng and export-dumping
substitutes for the new farm law.
The administration farm ohief en
visioned a "return to 1932" with
four-cent cotton, 30 cent wheat end
three-cent hogs unless "we get gen
uine and complete compliance" with
present programs.
' Not Political Job '
"Go out and defend your farm
programs against those who ara try
ing to divide the farmers,' Wallace
said.- "I am not urging you to do a
political Job but defend that In which
you believe."
Wallace's remarks were msde to a
meeting of 300 state committeemen
of the agricultural adjustment ad
ministration, called to Washington to
discuss plans for next year's planting
programs.
Reviewing the agricultural situa
tion. Wallace urged farmers to take
advantage of government loans to
hold surpluses off the market until
the supplies are smsller and prices
better.
The secretary criticized proposals
advanced In asme cotton and wheat
producing regions for replacing the
present farm law by a domestic al
lotment plan. Under this plan, the
government would fix prices on pro
ducts consumed domestically at rates
above world prices so aa to assure
growers cost of production. Parmers
would be free to produce all they de
sired for sale In export markets at
whatever prices they could get.
Would Destroy Farmer
"Many advocates of this plsn," he
said, "are people whose hearts sre
not right. They wold destroy the
farmer.
"This plan would constitute whole
sale export dumping. He would ship
out supplies abroad and get nothing
In return."
Wallace suggested, 'however, It
might be necessary to suDsldlze ex
ports of wheat In order to secure and
maintain thla country'a share In
world markets. He placed that share
at about 20 per cent of the world
trade or about 100,000,000 oushels an
nually. Land to Be Explored.

Antarctic Wilkes Land which was
annexed by Australia In 1P33 are to
