on a discovery that tubercle bacilli
can be starred. He oalla tt "the
moat promising lead" In his search
of more than 90 years for oure

Dr. Bolasevaln, formerly of the
University of Amsterdam, says that
if certain substances necessary for
the growth of tubercle bacilli can
be withdrawn from the human body
without harming the patient, then
tuberculosis can be conquered.
He found that one millionth of
a milligram of tubercle bacilli are
able to produce growth on culture
media In the presenco of a fatty
substance Isolated from egg yolk.
This same substance Is found In the
liver and spleen of guinea pigs where
tuberculosis 1 moBt frequently found
In those animals. Without this fatty
substanoe, one-tenth of a milligram
of tubercle bacilli, or 100,000 times
more, is necessary to produce growth.
"Although we have been able to
extract this substance, we have not
been able to Identify It," Dr. Bosse
vain explains..
"Our task now Is to find out what
it Is, and whether It can be elimi
nated from a person's body by tak
ing certain foods from his diet.
"It may ba that we could . starve
the bacilli to death without harm
ing the patient." '
Dr. Bolasevaln experimented with
serums, climate and other factors In
aeeklng a tuberculosis cure but he
says this present experiment teems
the most promising. He ha been at
it mora than a year.
The discovery that special growth
factor are necessary for bacteria la
not new. They ar known for the
diphtheria bacillus and for the stap
hylococcus (the germ that causes
bolls). In the case of quick-acting
disease Ilka diphtheria the germ
has dona Its damage by the tlms ths
germ-feeding substances could be
eliminated from the patient's body.
TIm, doctor says this Is not the
cass with tuberculosis, usually a
slow-acting disease.
"Then must be some substance or
condition that arises In th human
body that I favorable to tuberol
bacilli," says Dr. BMssevaln. "Ws
know that the bacilli will multiply
and that sometime they then an

from the disease.

"It may be that nature sometimes
create a condition that starve or
kills the bacilli.
