Brown returned this morning from
Salem whither he took George Gar
land, 35, for Imprisonment In the
state penitentiary. Garland was sen
tenced to three years In prison for
robbery. The sheriff went north with
the prisoner Saturday.

today that several tools were stolen
from his car parked In front of the
Allen hotel yesterday afternoon be
tween 1:30 and 3:30. The tools In
cluded . two hand saws, a chisel, a

time here Saturday night on their

WIFE SLAYER MAKES
ESCAPE FROM JAIL
SH ELTON, Aug. 8. Search for
Bernard R. Leuch, convicted wife
killer and former St. Cloud. Minn.,
policeman, who escaped from the
Mason county Jail yesterday, turned
to Puget Sound at daybreak today.
The possibility the fugitive, who
faces death on the gallows, made
his escape by boat was seen when
two bloodhounds, who took up his
trail during the night, followed It
eight mllea over Capital hill, north
west of Shel ton, down to the water's
edge .on the sound.
The dogs were sent over the trail
several times but each time It ended
on the beach.

After a pleasant week at 4-H sum
mer camp at Lake o' the Woods, Earl
Saltmarsh wishes to give his own
report.
' "Wo boys of the livestock club of
Oak Grove wish to express appre
ciation to all who made It possible
for the nice outing.
"On July 17. 65 4-H boys from
Klamath and Jackson counties ar
rived at the lake to begin a week
of summer camp. Getting tents In
order was soon under way, after
which 'we spent an hour swim
ming. We swam" twice each day
throughout the week.
"Every morning at M:30 we had
tent Inspection for which the win
ner was awarded a watermelon. At
sundown, we gathered ood for coun
cil fire, aroxind which we held our
council meetings. At 10 a. m. ench
day another meeting was held to
discuss activities of the day. Every
morning at three, except Wednesday,
every boy that wished went fishing.
Exceptional rental rates on boats
were given us during our stAy. A
visitor gave us one dollar f$r gaso
line to take us around the lake tn
the 4-H motor boat, which we all
appreciated.
"We went on three hikes, first,
three miles away to the lodge, sec
ond, to Buck peak lookout, thirteen
miles distant and third to Harriet
lake, twenty miles away, to stay over
night. "I wish every 4-H boy could have
been with us, for we all had a very
enjoyable time and would have been
eager to atay longer, and I hope
next year will bring more members
to 4-H csmp."
A discussion on jsr lids was held
by members of the Willing Workers'
canning clubs, led by their lender.
Bertie Parish at the meeting held
August 1 at the home of Marie
Logan. Colleen Taylor entered the
club. Piano selections were rendered
by Jo Anne Denny, Colleen Taylor
and Virginia Allen. Following the
meeting, a welner and marshmnllow
roast was enjoyed. Guests of the
evening were Mrs. Fred Belch, Mrs.
Ooodroad, Jr.. and Mrs. Logan, the
hostess' mother.

KAlt for a quick get-away, John Cobb.

serious contender for the world's land
speed record.
Towing his four-wheel drive. 8,500
pound car to this vast track shortly
after dawn. Cobb, sitting In the chas
sis, drove several miles, watching
various gadgets being used on a high
speed car for the first time.
Then his 'mechanics installed the
hull, barely four feet high and seven

SILVERTON. Ore., Aug. 8.
Fire destroyed one downtown busi
ness and damaged two other stores
between 3 and 3 o'clock this morn
ing. The George Mb noils cigar and
lunch room was the most damaged
and much of the stock ruined.
Loss to property Is covered by in
surance but a check on the Individ
ual losses could not be made Immed
iately. Prompt action by the volun
teer flro department and the fact
that the threatened bulldlngr were
protected on either aide by brick
buildings prevented further loss.

CARROLL JURY TO
VIEW CRIME SITE
SOUTH PARIS, Me., Aug. 8. (AP)
Superior Court Judge William H.
Fisher cut short today's session of
Francis M. Carroll's trial for the mur
der of Dr. Jamea O. Llttlefleld to per
mit two inspection trips by the Jury,
First the 13 men viewed the Turkey
Hill field, a mile from the courthouse
where Paul N. Dwyer. who went to
prison for the strangulation, claimed
Carroll slew Mrs. Lydla Llttlefleld. 63.
Then, court waa recessed until to
morrow and the Jury, traveling by
bus, went to New Gloucester to see
the place where Dwyer previously had
confessed killing Mrs. Llttlefleld.
He now accuses Carroll of both
crimes.

day to remind fire fighters of the
faat-apreadlng blase which aprang up
in alaahlnga near Blachly Saturday
afternoon and for two hours raced
uncontrolled through the treetopa.
Estimate of the burned area were
greatly reduced Monday from original
reports. It waa stated today that not
more than 50 acres were burned. Sat
